What's in your bottle? And why?
With all these different products out there and new stuff all the time, and as a newbie, I'm wondering what everyone has in there water bottles and camelbacks and why do you use that product?
I used to eat Clif Bars many years ago and loved them, but is there anything that compares that isn't as hard as a brick?
Thanks all.

Water with HEED only, if riding 2 hrs or less. Sustained Energy or Perpetuem mixed with HEED if more than 2 hours.
Hammer Expresso Gel always, Peanut Buzz whatever Clif bars if ride gets longer (3-4hrs plus).
Oh, the "why?" part: This system has worked well for me as fuel, and I don't have GI issues with this stuff. I just pack proportionately more of the stuff (including a refill for the bottle) as the ride gets longer.

Just water. I can't stand that flavored stuff.

I do mostly unsupported rides of 100 or more miles. I ride a touring bike with three bottle racks.
bottle 1 - water
bottle 2 - 6 scoops maltodextrin & 2/3 scoop soy protein (lasts me three hours) This gives me about 280 kcal / hr. I used to do 4 hour bottles but that was like drinking pancake batter
bottle 3 - water

+1 on HEED. I much prefer the orange flavor over the lemon-lime.
The Hammer Gels are also great. So, short rides it's
1 bottle water, 1 HEED.
Longer rides, two bottles with HEED and the small gel squeeze-bottle from Hammer with a concentrated paste of Perpeteum.

Water or Gu2O, depending on length of the ride. As for "Why?". I can drink it even during high intensity, long rides. In the end that what counts. It can be the greatest stuff on earth, but if you can't drink it because it tastes horrible it's not all that useful.

Not safe for work
Tap water. Gatorade is horrible, and protein whey is disgusting, and I haven't found any other drink mix I like. Even more inconvenient I hate Powerbars, GU, Cliffshots, Cliffbars etc. I usually take a couple of bottles filled with water, maybe stop for an espresso, and bring a cheese sandwich on my rides.

Mostly water, occasionally one bottle of Gatorade one of water. But I am going back to carrying fruit, a sandwich, pop tarts and the like which seem to provide plenty of energy and minerals a lot cheaper than sports drinks. I ride relatively slowly and long, but can easily digest real food at my typical pace. So my water bottle are being returned to water duty. Plus I love being able to give myself a dousing spray in hot weather to cool off. Try that with HEED.

My bottle has water. I do not need any food unless I am riding more than 60 miles. As for food, I like bananas, oranges, apples, pretzels, fig bars, and cookies.

I fill my Hydrapak and water bottle with a.) Poland Springs unflavored water and b.) unflavored well or tap water. I don't usually need anything else Occaisionally, I drink a small bottle of PepsI after the ride or workout.

water and maple syrup in about a 10:1 ratio. This mix gives me a little sugar, but goes down like water. Also its real. All natural, if you will.

If the ride's longer than 2-2.5 hours, one bottle with water, one with HEED. I like the "unflavored" HEED. I also bring food, gels, etc. I don't like to stop on rides so I bring it all with me.
Some Clif bars are not very hard at all, try some different flavors. Most of the bar type foods will be pretty dense- that is one advantage they have over real food. Three Clif bars easily fit into a jersey pocket, while three bagels would take up a lot more room. And the bagels are harder to swallow while riding.

1 water, 1 HEED for most rides. I dig the lemon-lime, but I just got strawberry, gonna try it tomorrow and see how it works out. I keep a clif bar (mint chocolate) in my back pocket in case I need it. That combination I take for anything from 40min to 2 hours (though on the shorter rides I won't usually drink it all)
On long rides, I start out with the same thing, and then fill up with whatever I can get at a grocery/deli/gas station, usually Gatorade. I've found that once I pass 3 hours of riding, the extra simple sugar in gatorade isn't really an issue, and my body is just willing to take whatever. Plus at that point the extra saltiness in the taste is actually kinda nice.
As for why heed, I just like the taste, it's only got a very slight taste to it, rather than the overpowering syrupiness of gatorade. (though as I mentioned, at a certain point I start to crave exactly that)
