    From 31 miles to 62 miles in 10 weeks too much?

    Hey there everyone. I am new to the forum and I am just getting into riding on the road. I usually just ride my mtn bike about 10-15 miles on the weekends. Lately I have been adding some road rides during the week, and yesterday completed 31 miles. There was some elevation change, but I can't tell you how much. Couldn't have been more than a few hundred feet though.

    So here is my question. I am thinking of signing up for the 62 mile ride in the Audi Best Buddies Challenge that is in just about 10 weeks from now. The course is 62 miles and just over 4100ft elevation gain. I have access to plenty of hills to train on, but don't want to bite off more than I can chew. I'm not the most competitive person out there and basically want to finish the ride in one piece.

    Yes I know it all depends on my commitment as well, but would doubling my distance in 10 weeks when I haven't really done any training yet be reaching too far?

    Sounds like you are already in good shape. Mountain biking 10-15 miles on steep trails and fire roads is probably as tough as riding a road bike twice that far on the road! How did you feel after the 31 miler? I think that 10 weeks is more than enough time to get ready for your metric century, especially if it is a supported event like the Audi ride is sure to be. Google "century training program" and you'll see lots of info online. If you can ride 3-4 times per week with steadily increasing mileage and climbing, you should not have a problem with the ride. Do it!

    Advice has always been don't attempt some ride you have not successfully completed a dry run before the actual event..From the sound of it: My prediction, You'll do fine.

    No problem if you just keep it up, and slowly build toward the event. You'll do fine.

    Thanks for the responses. I think I am going to sign up. I will be looking for local rides in the South Bay and group training rides for the event.

    Unfortunately that ride posted above was last sunday. I will keep my eyes peeled for the next one though. I have easy access to Page Mill and other very hilly roads so I think I can make this happen. I will probably start another thread somewhere to track my progress. I have a garmin 305 on the way to help with the training by keeping distance and elevation data.

    I made a somewhat similar transition from 20-30milers to my first metric in September last year. I'm sure you'll be just fine - the main differences will be comfort and possibly fueling, I doubt you'll find the distance and elevation a real concern. If I were you, I'd try a couple of longer rides just to see if your saddle/fit is still good after a couple of more hours riding. Also, I'm sure this is a well supported ride, but think through what hydration, electrolyte and nutrition strategy might work and potentially do a longer 40-50mile ride as a confidence booster beforehand.

    Thanks again guys. I think my biggest challenge is going to be the climbs. The ride has a 4188ft elevation gain. I completed 25 miles today with a 1100ft total elevation gain in about 2 hours. I believe I can do this now though. I just need to stay on the training and push as hard as I can. It would be great to ride with people that are a better than me to push me along and pass along tips.

    Also see if you can get a bit more info on the profile of the ride - how steep are the grades etc. You'll probably find that many of the climbs near where you are will be significantly tougher than the ones you'll meet going down the coast.

    If you can do it, try to pre-ride at least some of the hills ahead of time. That will help a lot.

    I will say that 4000' in a metric is a whole lot of elevation - I'd call that sort of ride "mostly hills".

    So, to update this, I've been riding about 3-4 times a week and have put in a few 44-47 mile rides with some hills. If you are familiar with Old La Honda in Woodside, I ride that about 2 times a week. I am very confident that I can complete the 100K ride on Sept 12th.

    What I am looking for now is if it might be possible to gear up a little more to complete the full 100 mile ride instead. I put in about 100+ miles a week right now and can ramp that up to about 130-150.

    For endurance hill climb training you can try this route: Stevens Canon > MtEden > Hwy9 > Skyline > Halfmoon Bay > Canada > Sandhill > Portola > OLH > 84 (descend). I've been riding this route every weekend, always extending it as I get fitter. My goal is to eventually include red wood gulch into the route.

    my sunday relax ride is 4000 feet of ascent over 35miles. i barely even notice the elevation gain over that distance. i wouldnt worry about 4000ft over 62 miles if i were you. (unless its all within 5 miles or something)
