    Winter Base Camp

So, I'm already planning out the start of next season and I know I'm going to have a fair amount of vacation to burn on a winter base training camp, where I plan to put in several hundred miles during the week to help jump start my base for the season, but I'm not sure where to go. In Colorado, I'm near Boulder, it can get bitterly cold during the winter and I hate riding inside, so I pile on the layers and face Old Man Winter. This year though, I thought a warm week of base riding would be a nice morale boost. I want to find a place within driving distance, a day or less, is bike friendly, and warm! So far, the best place seems to be Flagstaff, but I was wondering what others were thinking.

    Ideas?

Hey, another Boulderite here.... Flagstaff is at 8,000 feet, it's way too cold there in the winter. I drove through there last December, 3 feet of snow in town. The road scene seems marginal there, as well - it's more of an MTB place.

Tucson is the place I think about - it's possible to get pretty cheap weekly or monthly rentals there. But it's pretty far away. Albuquerque is a possibility too - but I like Tucson b/c I'm slightly familiar with it and there are good hill training opportunities.

THe last two years I splurged on a PacTour desert training camp week. www.pactour.com -- will probably do that again next year.

Flag itself averages about 7,000 ft. but 8,000' isn't hard to find.

My family lives there (and I will too in a couple of years). It is cold in the winter, I've done some road riding then but not a whole lot. Last winter there was a throwback to pre-drought days when Flagstaff would get 80 or more inches of snowfall in a winter. Most recent winters have been relatively light in snowfall.

Tucson area would also be my vote.
