Weight Lifting for Road Cyclists

Just recently got into road cycling, and love it very much. Have been riding ~100 miles per week so far in the last month. However, I've been lifting weights for the last 5 years. Not really for bulk, but to stay in shape w/ running, and that sort of thing. However, lifting legs absolutely killed my cycling for two weeks. Does anyone actually do leg weights while cycling? I'm not sure it's even necessary anymore. If so, what type of lifting exercises are done? I either need to seriously lighten the load, or stop altogether. Thanks!

Perform a search of this forum, and you should get a lot of answers.

I lift legs, and ride through mild soreness. Of course, your body may be different.

I've just been reading the Lance A.'s training book, there is indicated that weight training is good during the off season (winter time), but as long as semi light and high reps are used.

If you're only doing 100 miles a week or so, then weight training won't pose a problem. If you end up getting into racing and your mileage goes significantly up, you can ditch it all together. Last thing you want is the Lausberg body when you're trying to climb like Virenque!
