Has anybody here had Lasik eye surgery? If so how quickly were you back on your bike? I'm scheduled to have it done next Friday. The eye doc told me that I should be back on my bike in a matter of days. Although I trust the doctor I've chosen to preform the surgery he is not a cyclist so I don't know if he is taking into consideration the possibility of me getting sweat, dust, or even bugs in my eyes as I ride. I'd be interested in hearing anyone's experience with Lasik in relation to their cycling.

A friend of mine just had Lasik a couple weeks ago. He was back on the bike the next day. Nice and easy ride, but on the bike. The following day we went out a little harder/farther. He wore glasses the whole time on the bike and had no problems. The only "close call" was when a couple cars passed us on freshly rocked roads going a little too fast....he got a little freaked out about the dust and we slowed down and headed for a different route. Other than that, he had no problems.

I think the main concern would be to protect your eyes from drying out. And keep them out of the wind, wrap-around sunglasses would work well.

Infection is the main concern, so you would not want to have sweat running into your eyes. Wear glasses and just ride easy for a week. BTW you will love your new vision.

Had my LASIK 4 years ago, and have been very, very happy with the results and improved quality of life.

As I recall, my doc warned me about mountain biking due to the dust. Until your corneas heal (a week or so), you have to be very careful about rubbing your eyes.

Also, it may take a few days for your vision to stabilize enough that you feel like going out riding.

Just take it easy, and enjoy the sights...

My buddy had his surgery a couple of weeks ago, he was able to even drive later that day. He was able to ride the next day aswell, although a couple of days after he went night riding and experienced "halo effects" with oncoming lights from traffic/street lights. He said after the first week the "halo effects" went away and everything is amazing now.

I had Lasik in 2001. If your experience is like mine you could ride the same day with the following restrictions. First, for the first 4 days I experienced the "halo" effect on lights at night. Second, as pointed out previously, your eyes will be very dry and will require drops at least 3x a day for a few weeks at least and probably longer. Third, you will immediately notice you are much more light sensitive. Eventually the first two restrictions will disappear (within six weeks for me). I am still light sensitive. Lasik is well worth the restrictions. Technology may well have minimized the restrictions cited above. Good luck.

Its better since 01 because of wavefront and i just heard of a even newer and better one but dont recall what its called. When i heard of wavefront,i waited a year to let them use it.

I had t done in 99'. I was back biking in a couple of weeks, mostly waiting for it to warm up more than being scared about anything else. My big thing was waiting until I could get back in the water and start teaching scuba again. They told me 6 weeks until I could dive and I waited for 8- just because I was so paranoid about having my eyes sliced open.

Eyes were dry afterwards and sensitive to light. Best thing I ever did- next to marrying my wife.

Have any of you all needed to have the procedure done over again? I've been told that sometimes the procedure doesn't always leave you with perfect vision and you have to wear glasses or come back for more treatments? If you had this done, how is your vision now?

Cost range from 499{i wouldnt do that one,it was like cattle in the waiting room} to $4000. Sometimes they will need to touch it up at no extra charge. The pre screening tales a couple of hours and zapping you eyes takes,well mine was 76 seconds in one eye and 54 in the other.From the time i sat down to the time i got out was maybe 10 minutes.Didnt feel a thing. Go to someone thats done 1000's of them and for awhile.

When I had mine done I was nervous as hell. I drove to the next state just to find a doctor that I felt really comfortable with. It cost me $4,400 at the time, but I wouldn't have trusted some low-ball guy with my eyesite. Now I am sure that all of them are much cheaper, since more people are having it done.

I didn't need any touch-ups and the 'dry eyes' thing was the only thing that took a while to get over- not a problem now. Of course, dry eye's were a problem before I had the surgery and were the main reason I had so many troubles with contact lenses.

This whole Lasik thing still seems kind of iffy to me. If they screw it up it's your eyes not theirs :/

They have been doing it for a long time now and a good doc has done 1000's. Its free to get checked to see if you can get it done so just check it out. I felt the same way so i waited and read and checked into it and talked to people who had it done. Its all put into the computer,the info so the doc really just assists the machine. Painless,less then a shot.
