kashi golean diet?

what does everyone think about a kashi golean diet? basically, i would eat a box a day with as many carrots and fruit as i want. if i feel like im not getting enough food, i might add a protein shake

cereal box:

1 cup = 140 cal (8 servings per box)
14% potassium
10% carbs
40% dietary fiber
6g sugar
13g protein

UmneyDurak 12-10-09 08:42 PM

As with any other diet: Diets do not work, changing the lifestyle to eat healthier, and watch portions is the only long term solution.

trigger 12-10-09 09:01 PM

Uh, no.

I like that cereal and all, but I wouldn't try living on it. Plus, I find it way too sweet somehow ... I'm hungry much sooner after eating it than when I eat oatmeal or mueslix.

ericm979 12-10-09 09:56 PM

That stuff acts like its all sugar for me too.

It's be like going on a Cocoa Puffs diet.

jmechy 12-10-09 10:26 PM

Go lean is too sweet? Are you guys sure you aren't thinking of Go Lean Crunch? I find that Go Lean isn't all that sweet, sometimes I'll add some brown sugar to my bowl to make it a little sweeter.

Durak hit it spot on.
You have to accept that healthy foods will make you healthy, eating less of them will make you lighter, and moving more will make you leaner.
Complicating it any further is a design of the diet and fitness industry.

I started writing a book about this last night for this post. Deleted it multiple times. What is said above is really my thoughts, very easily should be a sticky at the top of many forums.

I agree as well. Bottom line- whole grains, nuts, and seeds are great (essential, actually), but instead of getting them in a processed cereal, why not just get them in bulk and add them to your meal plan yourself? Kashi and others are great alternatives to Froot Loops, but I'm afraid that they really don't do much for changing people's attitudes and behaviors about food. IMHO, people feel more invested in dietary change if they take responsibility for it, rather than relying on someone else.

Yea, you're right. I didn't know there was a difference. I don't eat usually the stuff, my wife does. I've only eaten Go Lean Crunch when I was out of Grape Nuts. She says that regular Go Lean is "sticks and rocks". But she describes Grape Nuts as "gravel" so perhaps I'd like regular Go Lean.

But even the healthiest cereal isn't a good foundation for a diet. Rather than restricting yourself to a few foods it is better to eat a variety of healthy food in moderation. A short term diet that is hard to stick to won't do anything in the long run- even if you do lose weight under it you will gain the weight back as soon as you quit the diet, and you will quit a restrictive weird diet. If you want to lose weight and keep it off you need to make a lifestyle change, not go on a fad diet.

I never got the GoLean thing. Kashi had a great seven whole grains and seasame cereal that has no sweeteners (puffs or nuggets). Then there was this proliferation of sweetened cereal and I find it hard to get the whole grain ones anymore although it is still made, it seems it is never in stock and when it does come in it disappears fast.

Just to be clear, this is the one we are talking about, right?

First and foremost, I don't care about anything else you've written. Froot Loops have no alternatives and will not be disparaged on my watch, mister. You'd better watch your ass!

Ah, but what about Cap'n Crunch? Except, I seem to remember it cutting my mouth when I was a kid. Did you know some woman sued because she claimed she was led to believe crunchberries were a real fruit? Yup, we used to pick them while we were snipe hunting. Much better straight off the bush, and made a great relish for the little beasts when we did catch them.

I have a great recipe somewhere for wild crunchberry stuffing for jackalope but it would probably work for snipe, too. If I find it i'll post it.

For what it's worth I actually do use GoLean Crunch in my home made energy bars sometimes, but then the extra added sugar is welcome.

8 servings a day with 40% of your fiber in each server? I hope you have several magazine subscriptions........

What's complicated about eating a box of cereal every day? Boring, yes. Complicated, no.

im pretty used to it...this wouldn't affect me.

obviously, this isn't a lifestyle change. it is a change to lose weight and then go back to eating normally. problem occurred about a year ago when i got injured, couldn't work out for about 4 months, and gained about 30 pounds. can't get rid of them now, even while biking 60 miles/day

While I agree with whoever mentioned eating a larger variety of foods being a healthier diet, I say go for it. I'm assuming you have tried other things and they didn't work. Everyone has a unique metabolism and mental reactions so perhaps this is what you need.

I made a push this summer to loose some weight and managed to drop about 20#. My plan was based around a bowl of oatmeal in the morning, fresh raw fruits and vegetables for the rest of the day and then a dinner such as a fish or chicken fillet with cooked vegetables and a whole grain side of some sort. Averaged around 2200 calories. During this time I was generally burning about 3200 calories a day which works out to a 2 pound a week drop and that is generally what I saw. Since then I have added back a lunch of soup and a yogurt and maybe a small desert to bring me back to around 3000 calories a day and I have been maintaining 165 which is where I want to be. I'm 37, not quite 5'11 and for the most part an amateur soccer and hockey player who uses cycling for conditioning.

Anyway, my point is that I planned out and counted every calorie I ate and used carrot and celery sticks as a go to when I absolutely needed to eat something. Having a plan and being disciplined works, and if Kashi is what you can stick to, I say do it. No matter what others may think, you will still be eating healthier than most other people.

Good luck.

Overly restrictive, unrealistic portion control, and not a long term solution at all.
To the OP, the reason you gained weight when you got injured is because you kept eating as if you hadn't been injured at all. Every change you make to your diet for weightloss has to a long term change that you can stick with, unless you actually like having weight fluctuations that justify ridiculous things such as eating a box of cereal a day.
WHAT YOU NEED IS FRUITS AND FRUITS ONLY-Sorry, I was just suprised that hemprider hasn't shown up yet so I figured I might try and say it for him before he derails the thread.

Well if you're going to steal HR's fruit thunder then I'm going to be the first to point out that babys only need 6% protein so why would an adult need more? And soy is poison or something.
