I'm with you. This stuff isn't food. A Snickers bar would be a lot better.
Sodium propionate? Yeah, I grow that in my garden right next to a row of partially hydrogenated vegetables.
Not everything ingestible is food.

Honestly I don't understand why anyone would think this processed junk food is a good on bike fuel, or good in general.

I'm definately in agreement that those pies don't sound too good for you... however, what makes you think a Snickers is any better?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snickers
"In the US, Snickers ingredients are: milk chocolate (sugar, cocoa butter, chocolate, skimmed milk, lactose, milkfat, soy lecithin, artificial flavor), peanuts, corn syrup, sugar, skim milk, butter, milkfat, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, lactose, salt, egg whites and artificial flavors"

It's a Scotch pie. Wheat based crust/casing with meat filling. Not very good for you, carbs, protein and plenty of bad fat. They taste good though, once in a while anyway! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotch_pie

Well, I didn't say it's a lot better. But just look at the list of chemicals in those pies. Yes, I know ultimately everything is a chemical. But sugar, skim milk, butter, milkfat, egg-whites in the bar - those sound more food-like to me.
Again, not saying the Snickers bar is health food. Just saying it's mostly not a chemical plant product, unlike the pie. Anyone who wants one of those pies, or a poptart, or a gas station burrito, I say go for it and eat it like you mean it. It's just not my preference.

the difference I see (and it may not matter) is that one is actual food where the other is actual cr*p
anecdote: one woman was pregnant here in the office and she thought her pregnancy was an excuse to eat whatever she wanted including all kinds of crap that people brought in to share such as cookies and chocolates. one day I suggested to her: look at what you're putting in your mouth and consider if you can make a baby out of it. you're trying to build bone; muscle and some other stuff. so what foods would help you build that? twizzlers? I don't think so
btw: I don't think you burn fat during exercise. you burn fat between training sessions. calories from fat come out too slowly. you have to nutrify your intense training sessions with complex and simple carbs, then immediately afterward some additional simple carbs can be readily burned up. this is a good time to also ingest protein especially when liquefied
you can eat the pie but the chicken sandwich and banana is better for you.
unrelated?: I once tried a container of muscle milk 1/2 way through an all day ride and found it to be very very beneficial to my riding and I was surprisingly energetic for the 2nd half
my idea of reward food post~ride isn't donuts - it's sausage eggs and cheese on a croissant which I think is a bit more useful for building muscle mass than donuts.
edit: in re-reading this I sound like a jerk. I LIKE PIE!

Save your money...just throw a pack or two (depending on ride length) of poptarts in your jersey pocket. Each one is approx. 200 calories. Eat one every 30-45 minutes and your golden.

Right with you there. If i'm going to eat unhealthy it's got to be something savoury. Sweet stuff just seems so unsatisfying. Scotch pie's all the way

Well, when I do buy them, the one's I get are made locally, with straight-forward ingredients and local butcher meat. I'd have one over a pop-tart any time of the year. Everything in moderation though
