Got called up for a 24 hr team race, unprepared, 1 1/2 weeks out
I owed a friend a favour and he called me up 4 days ago, to call it in. I'm now racing in a 24 hour race in Human powered vehicles-and I've just come off crit season too.
My whole crit season was structured around sprint training, and as a result I can move quite quickly over a short distance-but this racing requires a fair bit of endurance at a high aerobic level (maybe 180-190bpm which is aerobic for me, not quite threshold).
So since then I've done about 12 hours training, including an hour of track racing (to keep the "sprint fitness" and cadence up). The rides I'm doing are reasonably hilly, and I'm doing them as hard as I can and still get home. (It's not just junk miles)
I figure the best preparation on such short notice is going to be preparing my body for a smashing, and trying to get it used to lots and lots of riding. As far as muscle groups, go, riding my normal bike isn't going to improve my speed in a recumbent much, but it's the endurance I'm after.
Thoughts? My race is Sat-Sunday week, (it's thursday where I'm typing) and riding thurs/friday isn't an option.
