Indoor trainers

I ride a set of Kreitler rollers, with a headwind unit if I want resistance. I use them to improve my speedwork, with high cadence, around 120rpm and when I put the headwind unit on I can adjust resistance to simulate hillwork at a cadence of around 65rpm. I also do a lactate threshold test on them once a month, with a power meter/heart monitor fitted to the bike. Rollers are not forgiving, meaning that you have to concentrate and if you pedal unefficiently, specially at high cadence, the rollers tell you immediately. They are great for improving your riding style and efficiency. I believe that when you get to the stage where you can get onto the rollers, without having to use side support and you can ride on them loose hands, they have done more for your cycling than you will ever get from a static trainer.

Rollers aren't the best if you plan on using them for training. They are better for race warmups, or working on a perfect spin. Stationary trainers are not good for race warmups because they're heavy and hard to lug around. They are the best for long winters indoors though.
