Another Question on Trainers

Hi,

I need some help in selecting a trainer. I have been reading reviews and am leaning towards a Kurt Kinetic Standard trainer. Does anyone out their have a recommendation among, Cylclo-Ops Fluid 2 Square, Minoura MagTurbo 850, Kurt Kinetic Standard, Performance Travel Trac, and Blackburn Mag ? Are the fluid Trainers better than the Mag Trainers?

Try looking at the reviews on Road Bike Review. After looking at all the different ones, I ordered the 1-Up USA trainer; it arrives today. I'll post later to give my 2 cents worth.

Last week I received my Kurt Kinetics top of the line model, awesome!
Yesterday I used it for the very first time: very much road feel like, I was just hammering away, even standing up pretending I was Lance breaking away from Basso on a very steep incline...hehehe!!!

For the the OP: if you have specific questions on this product, shoot away, now I have first hand info.

I have a 1-UP USA Trainer. I actually like it and find it quite easy to use. I ended up tightening the resistence. One thing of note: ensure that you get a softer tire. I used my Kevlar tire on it and it squeaked like anything. The SO got a softer tire and he was nearly whisper quiet.

I use a Vittoria kevlar tire and doesn't squeak on my kurt trainer, very smooth.

I suspect mine did because it's a MTB slick and has a wider base.

I am really happy with my CycleOps Fluid2 trainer. I use it with my moutain bike and with a 1.5" slick rear tire. I was getting some squeaks and I cut off a piece of an old inner tube and placed in on the clamp side of the wheel holder and the squeak is gone when I am cranking the pedals while out of the saddle. The CycleOps Fluid2 is awesome with its progressive resistance. I never liked manual resistance like on Blackburns, etc.

Just opened up the 1-Up trainer. Only took about three minutes and I had my bike already set up on the thing! couldn't be easier. Did you get a really low thumping noise on yours too? I have my Specialized Pro slicks on it right now. I planned on picking up some new tires so I didn't wear 'em out, any suggestions?

Thumping noise? Wonder if the flywheel is tightened well enough. I've only had my trainer for about a year and only used it last winter. I'll be getting new slicks for this winter so I can't advise anything specifically. Ask at your LBS. Tell them you'll be on a trainer and you want a tire that would be best for that. Ideally something without kevlar, etc. Reality is that this will wear out your tire and you'll need a new one each year or every other year but that's ok.
