Powerbars?

Can't anyone make a powerbar that doesn't taste like tire tread? What are peoples favorites and where can they be purchased relatively cheap. (single or by the case)

I don't mind the plain old power bars at all but a lot of people seem to think they taste like sawdust. Wal-Mart has power bars and cliff bars which a lot of riders like much more that the powerbars, can be had for a little less than a buck.

Hey! If you find one that tastes decent-let me know! I have tried 4 different types-and not one is pleasant. Maybe someone here makes their own? Has a good recipe?

CommuterKat 09-19-04 03:34 PM

I think they all taste a little funky, although I can tolerate Clif bars. Peanut Butter is my favorite

Travelinguyrt 09-19-04 04:19 PM

Make your own
Simple easy and relatively inexpensive
I make my own and carry them every where
Equal parts oatmeal not the instant kind, peanut butter, the instore ground type no salt added and fergodsake no hydroginated oils, ferget Skippy and Jif.
A good powered hi protein powder, and enuf honey to hold the glop together, wear rubber or latex gloves to make for easier mixing, should be the consistency of the home made fudge your Mother made, maybe a bit thicker. I add cinammon, nuts of choice, and raisins, carob powder for variety
Spread about 1/2" thick in a flat pan and let chill for a bit.
Doesn't have to be kept refridgerated, I carried 5 pounds to Mt Kilo when buds and I did the climb there, the guides thought they were great.

Today i tried clif bars for the first time and loved them. They are 1000 times better then powerbars.

fujibike 09-19-04 05:27 PM

clif bar fan myself too

Indolent58 09-19-04 05:35 PM

Fig Newtons? Granola Bars? Rice Crispies Treats?

Sports snacks are supposed to taste bad so you won't feel guilty about eating them.

beowoulfe 09-19-04 05:41 PM

If you are hungry enough, you can even eat a power/protein bar.

jk......kindof

Luna Bar (Women's bar made by Clif)
- Chai Tea
- Dulce De Leche
LaraBar (whole food bar, better for long outings, very filling)
- like all thier flavors

clif bars give me incredible gas. for like 12 hours after I eat one, I am farting consistently every 5 minutes or so. I have 8 left out of a twelve pack, I'm trying get rid of them, offering them to friends and whatnot, (just not my roommate!)

I like the vanilla crisp powerbar. I think it tastes pretty good.

rcams 09-19-04 07:25 PM

An unfrosted Pop-Tart looks like the nutritional equivalent of a PowerBar to me. Maybe a nutritionist could tell us the sugars are a different form etc, but check the labels and they're damn close.

Pedal Wench 09-19-04 08:38 PM

Snicker's Marathon bar - chewy chocolate. It's by Snickers. What more is there to say? Seriously, they're really pretty good. Also, most flavors of Luna Bars. They need to change their marketing - I don't see why men shouldn't like/eat/enjoy them too. The only flavor I don't care for is the Sesame one.

Personally, I love the taste of wet cardboard ...

I've been using Clif Bars recently. Cheapest has been about 0.70 per bar (Supergo clearance and also a price match @ Performance). Flavors: Black Cherry, Peanut Butter, Choc Chip, Carrot Cake.

Also, had a bad experience with PB when skiing. Had it in my fanny bag and not in an inside jacket pocket. I was SO hungry and the damn thing was frozen stiff. I think I used more calories to eat the PB than I got out of it. Moral: PBs freeze up real well (carboard popsicle). Yuck.

Oh, I also bring Fig Newtons along too.

Since I put more Maltodextrin into Cytomax, I find that unless the ride is 50+, I generally don't need a bar.
Best.

From their website:

"Yes, there is nothing in a LUNA bar that is not good for men. However, LUNA bars are specifically formulated to provide women with the nutrients that are often harder for them to get."

I've tried alot of energy / protein bars. Only had one Clif bar, but I quite liked it. I also like the Kellogs Vector bars, which seem relatively cheap compared to others. The Genisoy bar I had once was very tasty as well, as are the soy crisps made by the same company. If I've got some other source of protein with me, I like to get carbs from Rebar or Real Green veggie/fruit bars. Many of these are Canadian products, eh, if you're wondering why you've never heard of 'em.

Mmmmm, bar food. I wonder how long it will be until all the food we eat comes in bar form.

i like (and by that, i mean tolerate) the powerbar harvest: double chocolate and peanut butter choc. chip. my roomate prefers the cliff bars in some apple type flavoring.

Erick L 09-21-04 09:56 AM

I usually buy the Kellog Vectors. They are a bit smaller but much cheaper than other brands. I don't understand the fuss about Cliff bars, I don't find them any better or worse than Powerbar Harvest (I like those). Maybe I just have bad taste, as I tried plain Powerbars and while the texture is awful, the taste itself wasn't so bad. I did find them easier to digest while riding.

Try Kashi Go-Lean bars. Plenty of flavors to choose from and all are very tasty. Plus they don't have any hfcs in them which is a HUGE bonus.

Guest 09-21-04 06:39 PM

The new Pria bars by Powerbar is pretty good. They sent us ELEVEN boxes of the stuff... hundreds of bars that took very little time for all our members to eat up. :)

I like fig newtons and rice krispy treats. Trail mix or dried fruit is also great. Cheaper than power-type bars and tastier.

oboeguy 09-21-04 09:16 PM

No love for the PB? I have always liked the taste of them, to be honest. My favorites are good old Wild Berry, and a couple of newer flavors, Vanilla Crisp and Cookies and Cream (yum!). I've never liked Cliff Bars much.

4.6MustangSteve 09-22-04 02:34 PM

I always thought chocolate and peanut butter powerbars were good. Same with the vanilla crisp.

cchandler 09-23-04 06:54 AM

Carrot Cake Clif bars are GREAT!
