    supplements

    starting to get ready for my second year racing. was wondering if anybody has had any luck with legal supplements to incress speed and endurance. i will be racing mostly crits and tt. if you have what are they and where can i buy them.

    There have been many days when I haven't felt like riding, but there has never been a day when I was sorry I rode.

    How old are you?

    Look at supplementation as the way to give your body everything it needs in order for it to create all of the pharmacological goodies you need such as human growth hormone and testosterone. Good quality vitamins (endurance training drains your body of key nutrients), essential amino acids (whey proteins) and essential fatty acids (flax and other oils) will put your body on the right track. Train hard, eat smart, and believe rest as important as the other two, and your body will support you.

    I don't believe on precursors (the theory that if you flood your body with the precursors of hormones your body will produce more of them). For instance, one of the precursors of testosterone is common fat. I don't recall any particular study but I seriously don't think that overweight people suffer from too much testosterone....

    Endurance training is more about training your mind than your body. If you learn how to transcend missery, you will progress faster and become stronger than people with better genetic make up.

    im 26 i already take a multi vitamin. i was just looking to see if there was anything out there that could give me an edge.

    You would be amazed at the huge impact proper nutrition and rest have on your ability to become stronger. Nobody has ever gotten stronger while on the bike. As a matter of fact when you are done riding hard, you are worse than before, spent, and with a compromised immune system. It is while resting that your system has a chance to rebuilt itself into something better. Screw up enough with your rest and diet, and you might as well not bother training.

    A good book on the subject is "Nutrient Timing, the future of sports nutrition". It has a very good overview on how your body uses nutrients to rebuild itself, and how to maximize said rebuilding. Another must have book is "fats that heal, fats that kill". Everybody should have a copy of that book.

    Supplements are a feather. Training is a hammer. Good nutrition is a given. Outside of that, there's nothing that really helps, nutritionally. I haven't tried mussels, though. Interesting idea. Broccoli braised in flaxseed oil.

    That said, caffeine works marvelously well. For TT use a pill rather than drink it so you don't have to pee. Take it about 1 hour before the start. Very common. A doppio is used a lot, too.

    There are various nitrous oxide (NO) secretion increasers. Some work, some don't, some just give you the jitters, some contain substances that may be proscribed. Most of them also contain caffeine or caffeine analogues, so don't use additional caffeine.

    Sodium phosphate works. You have to follow the administration schedule exactly.

    I've heard that Oxyshot works, but haven't tried it. Also used as a calmer for horses. They like oxygen, apparently.
