Garmin Edge 500 Heart monitor strap

Ok, I've been hesitating on pulling the trigger on a 500 but I'm pretty sure that's what I want. Maybe not what I actually need but I like the idea of having all the data.

That said, I was going to order the premium heart monitor strap with it along with the speed/cad. sensor. I was just wondering if the HRM in the 500 would read data from a Timex HRM strap that I currently have.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Since getting back on the bike following my accident I've been riding without a computer and I miss the data...but I still enjoy the ride.

Only if it uses the Ant+ protocol. My Edge 500 will not read a Polar or Suunto strap, for example.
