Homemade Energy Drink
I discovered that I have five pounds of bakers sugar in my pantry that I never use, and so I decided to use it up making my own energy drink. The recipe that I have developed and been using is as follows:
1/3 cup sugar
¼ teaspoon of iodized salt
1/8 teaspoon of salt substitute for the potassium
I add this to two quarts of tap water.
I am interested in any comments or suggestions you might have.
When the baker’s sugar is gone, I plan on substituting Country Time Lemonade mix for the sugar as it is mostly sugar. When that is gone I’ll decide on what to try next.

I forgot where I found this.
Lemon-orange sports drink
Water
1 caffeine-free lemon tea bag
2 tablespoons sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons orange juice
Bring 16 ounces of water to a boil. Steep lemon tea bag. Dissolve sugar and salt in the tea and let cool. Combine the tea and orange juice and chill.
Nutritional info per 8 ounce serving: 60 calories; less than 1g protein; 15g carbohydrates; 130mg sodium; less than 1g fat
Although you won't taste it, a scant amount of sodium is added to the recipe to help keep you better hydrated. Working out for long periods of time without adequate sodium levels can cause the blood sodium levels to drop to dangerously low levels. Drink this homemade concoction before, during, or after working out.

Back when I first started racing.....in the 70's when we didn't have energy drinks (or I couldn't afford them) we would add some salt to coke. It causes it to fizz and lose most of the carbonation. Then you'd add ice to dilute it a bit as it is a bit sweeter without the fizz. You ended up with sugar and bit of sodium and caffeine. I have no idea if it works, it's just what we drank sometimes.

Make Your Own Inexpensive Energy Drinks – 4 easy steps
Making Your Own Homemade Energy Drink using Simple Ingredients...
1. Decide what drink you would like to use. Water, Gatorade, Juice, etc (if you drink it ~ you can use it).
2. Purchase a ready to use liquid caffeine mix (Google: Semi-Sweetened Energy Mix). The thing to remember is that powder caffeine will not work. It will not dissolve in cold beverages. And even in hot beverages it will only dissolve slightly. Don’t worry – liquid caffeine is very inexpensive and will save you a lot of money – guaranteed.
3. Mix the inexpensive liquid caffeine with your favorite beverage. Again, if you drink it ~ you can add liquid caffeine to it.
4. Consume - and enjoy your new found energy. You will no longer need to waste your money on brand-name energy drinks and shots (Monster, Rockstar, 5 Hour Energy, Full Throttle, Redline, 6 Hour, Amp, Jolt, Nos, Red Bull, SoBe, Vitamin Water, etc).

I mix OJ, water and salt then steep a tea bag in it for the flavor. I got it from some website, and if I understand electrolytes correctly, they are just potassium bonded with salt, and OJ has plenty of potassium.
I like the liquid caffeine idea, I assume that it is only for use during races? I can't see any advantage to training to caffeine, but my insight on these matters is rather limited.

How about this from https://chetday.com/energydrinkrecipe.htm
"...here's my recipe for my own home-made energy drink:
1. Make a big iced tea mixture using green tea, white tea, and yerba mate tea. I like to add a little fruit flavor, so I'll use 1 tea bag of a raspberry or blueberry hibiscus tea, and then use 2-3 green and/or white tea bags, and 2-3 yerba mate tea bags, and make a gallon container of iced tea. I just use a small amount of stevia to lightly sweeten the batch of tea.
2. I buy a container of organic coconut water from a health food store, or buy fresh coconuts to obtain the coconut water from the inside.
3. For my healthy energy drink, I mix a half of a glass of the white/green/yerba mate iced tea mixture and fill the rest of the glass with the coconut water."
**Disclaimer- I don't do long rides, just short commutes and some mountain biking. Just wanted to throw an alternative out there.
