how deep do you breathe?

Just how much air is needed to enhance performance? Do you deliberately take very deep breaths, or just let breathing increase or decrease naturally, depending on how hard you're working?

I find by good, deep exhales, the inhales will take care of themselves. That is taught when learning to breathe in SCUBA classes. All the physiology and stuff involved when someone is at different "atmospheres". (depth) Your body will take in the proper amount of mixed gas( oxygen and hydrogen) by getting rid of used air. Try this: head for a hill and start concentrating on exhales ONLY. Make an effort to try to get rid of all used air in your lungs. Your inhales will properly compensate. You will be amazed at the difference in your stamina that this does.

The only thing I do is to avoid short, quick breaths. Also now come to think of it, I think that when I'm climbing a hard hill, I will inhale more than exhale sometimes.

The important thing is to learn to "belly-breathe". If your shoulders move up and down when you take a deep breath, you don't have it. Find a little baby and watch it breathe. Their abdomen moves in and out. This is the natural way to breathe, and you should start doing it, too. Your body will make sure you breathe often enough. Just try to relax and breathe through your nose and mouth.

By the way, try not to inhale more than you exhale, like some people on this forum. You'll blow up like a balloon

When possible, yes. I find that one breath to every 4-5 pedal revolutions is "deep" enough for me, that would average to about 17-23 (or so) breaths per minute.

I just let my body decide how hard I need to breathe, unless I'm stuck behind a bus on my commute or a similar situation, in which case I make a conscious effort to back off the intensity so as not to breathe very hard. It's usually my thighs that give me the most trouble on climbs anyway.
