Tiger Balm and Plastic Wrap?

I'd read somewhere that you can help the effect of Tiger Balm on joints/muscles by applying it and then wrapping that area with a loose layer of saran wrap to help the vapors penetrate and not escape. Is this a common use?

I don't think that it's a very good idea.

I knew a guy who applied liquid Heet to an gimpy ankle. He covered it up with a cotton sock and after about 20 minutes of playing touch football, he ran at a world record pace into the showers, yanked off his shoes and socks and stood there with his foot under a cold shower for 10 minutes. His foot looked like it had a chemical burn.

Tiger Balm is mostly menthol and camphor. Applying plastic wrap over it may cause overabsorption. It's supposed to work by causing the blood vessels to dilate by irritating the skin. You may wind up with a similar reaction to it as my friend had.

They often use patches over topical lidocaine applications, but I would check with your doctor before trying it...

I had a sadistic coach in college 45 years ago who'd recommend that. I wouldn't.
