Biking in City Smog with Asthma
Hi there,
i just had a beautiful 16 mile ride in the hills of Pasadina California on a typical smog day. When i got home my lungs were sore and my voice changed but i dont know if it was the smog or the dry air. Im 39 and i have my asthma under control using advair discus 1-2 times a day and sometimes not needing it. I cant avoid riding in smog (i dont own a car) so any tips/links of dealing with smog from asthmatics would be greatly appreciated.

Can't help with the asthma side, unless you get a filter mask.
Since you say your voice changed, though, I suspect you may need to drink more. My wife will always tell me I need to drink more after a long, hot ride if I sound hoarse. 16 miles in dry SoCal, especially if they were slow miles, might trigger that response.

Also, going hard on the bike can trigger "pursuiter's cough". I'm not sure what causes it but I've had it after races and heard other riders with the same cough. Voice also gets deeper.

OK ill get a camelback to keep my throat/lungs moist...its gotta help cuz I was hammering up zee hills in low gear and taking infrequent water breaks which caused major cotton mouth/throat...duh...live and learn
I have been researching respirators, it seems they work for break dust and such but not on ozone/smog. Getting one soon to test in the dusty zones (downtown LA)
Thanks for the advice!
