"Resting Heart Rate", or is it "Minimum Heart Rate"?

For the sake of determining my heart rate zones, should my "resting heart rate" be the lowest heart rate that I've recorded, or should it be my typical heart rate when I'm sitting/relaxing, i.e. an "average" low?

When I wake up it averages from 50-56, but will go down to 46-48 briefly.

If I should go with 46, why don't they call it a "minimum heart rate"?

Your resting heart rate is the average heart rate when you are resting. Generally it's taken when you first wake up in the morning or when you are lying down for about 20 minutes. The little up and down heart rate spikes are averaged out over time.

Resting HR is taken before you get out of bed for one full minute, do it every day for 5 days in a row. You can count your HR or wear a HRMonitor.

it's probably better to use zones based on max HR, resting HR can mean a few things and will differ - HR when you wake? seated HR? seated on the bike? etc...
