Stationary trainer tread loss?

I just started training on an indoor trainer a few days ago. I love it and hate it all at the same time. I am new to the sport of road cycling this past summer and live in an area where I don't have many friends who are into it to ask questions. Not to mention the local bike shops are getting tired of me i think. What I was wondering is, how much tread am I supposed to be losing on a good set of competition slicks on the trainer per ride? How tight should I have the resistance screwed down onto the tire?

My cyclops says to do 2.5 turns on the knob once the trainer hits the rear wheel.

Don't use good tires on the trainer, you'll go thru them too fast. I already wasted a good speedmax. I've heard kevlar beads last longer. I've a cheap hutchinson I'm using now.

I'd go about 2 turns of the knob for a high pressure slick road tire. Recommendations will vary by brand though.

Buy the cheapest, smoothest tires you can get for using on the trainer. I just got some Hutchinson Flash tires from Nashbar for $5 each. Even WalMart's tires are $8!

Thanks for the info. I have been using the racing slicks that came on the bike and i have only ridden three days and there is an almost melted looking ridge where the trainer hits the tire. I know they have road tires @ walmart for 8$ but they have a center ridge and a very small amount of tread. Will that sort of thing work on a trainer
