    favorite healthy snacks

    As I ride more miles, and faster, I am getting hungrier. Since on eof my objectives in riding my bike is to become more fit and lean, this is a problem for me. I'm the kind of person who likes to nibble on things in any case and have nearly zero willpower when it comes to sweets or baking (mmmmm cookies).

    So, can anyone recommend healthy, tasty snacks to have in my office or around the house? Respectfully to all who may be thinking about it, I know about celery, carrots, or fruit already

    No pudge brownies!! It's a mix you buy in the grocery store and mix with yogurt, and then bake. OMG, they're YUMMY!! Even my underweight fast food junkie hubby liked them.

    Fat free yogurt. It's amazing how delicious and filling those single serving cups are.

    GORP (raisins & peanuts). Good to nibble on. I can't seem to gorge this stuff no matter how hungry I am.

    Almonds. Blue Diamond has a chili-lime flavor that's just awesome. They're relatively high in fat, so don't go crazy on them, but it's a good fat and they're very satisfying.

    Lol....that reminds me of a stupid story. I was in Honduras this summer living with a family while teaching English at a local elementary school. The family had a maid, and she got sick, so I stopped getting meals. After a couple days I went to the kitchen and there was a stick of cream cheese in the fridge. Believe it or not, I ate the whole thing. It was pretty disgusting, but I was starving. I almost got down to 130 lbs on that trip (after just 5 weeks).

    Ive been seriously chowing down on apples, oranges, and pears lately. Im no health food fanatic but fruits have been really appealing to me. Maybe its my body telling me I need to eat healthier since I started cycling.

    Nuts - 3 Brazil nuts a day will meet your selenium quota. Moldy full-flavored cheese like "blue cheese", stilton or gorgonzola (say, on a *******) has a nice filling quality.

    My Fav Snacks for when my sweet tooth kicks in:

    YOGURT MIX: 150 cals
    1/2 cup nonfat yogurt
    1/3 cup high fiber/low cal cereal
    teaspoon reduced sugar strawberry jam

    Squash - 100 cals
    Butternut squash, cubed
    Sprayed with cooking spray (pam olive oil)
    sprinkled with brown sugar, 1 T
    475 oven for 25 mins

    Also, if you are craving sweets, try a tootsie pop or a blow pop. Only 50 calories and they last for 30 mins

    Also, they make microwavable kettle corn with splenda in snack size bags. Lots of sugary sweet food for only 150 calories.

    Good desert: reduced sugar hot chocolate. solves that after dinner desert craving. add a little milk so its not so watery 65 calories

    Make your own trail mix -- any combination of salted peanuts, raisins, dried cranberries, salted almonds, dried papaya chunks, granola, pumpkin seeds and a handful of M&Ms. The salted nuts keep your salt levels up on a gruelling ride, the dried fruits just taste good and M&Ms give you your chocolate fix without going completely over the top. And then pack 'em all up in little ziploc bags and munch at will.

    Kashi Cereals, without milk. Crunchy and sweet if you add the Kashi Crunch to the mix. Or throw some of that cereal on top of some no-fat yogurt.

    I also got a recipe off the web for some bread made of whole wheat flower, oatmeal, and wheat germ, but without any butter or sugar. A loaf just takes one egg and 1/2 cup milk. So it's very low fat, no sugar, high protein, and high fiber. It's best described as hearty. You can throw in some nutmeg or cinnamon. Chopped apples are good, too, and so is sliced carrot. Make a loaf or two on the weekend and then bring it with you to work.

    This might sound disgusting, but I actually love it (and got my husband hooked too): low-fat cottage cheese with a sprinkle of Equal and cinnamon. Kind of tastes like rice pudding but packed with protein for a great after-workout snack. I also like granola mixed in with cottage cheese.

    Bananas! Been eating them for 22 years and still not tired of them! I got me a tub of dried cranberries too for like 5.99 that I've been hitting pretty heavy lately.

    Fig Newtons. I love those things. I buy a two pound box and it'll last me about two weeks at work. I forget the fat content and all but compared to prepackaged crackers and cheese or other snack food, they are quite healthy. Plus, the little fig seeds get stuck in your teeth and you spend so much time trying to get them out that you end up eating less. Or maybe that's just me. I also have a serious sweet tooth and when I crack, I go for a 3 Musketeers or some Twizzlers. Again, not the epitome of health food but better than some other alternatives.

    Soy Crisps! They are mostly soy protiene and they taste like chips but not all greasy and nasty. They are so damn awsome. The bar-b-q are the best in my opinion.

    Yes, Soy Crisps rock! I just wish all these healthy snacking alternatives were as cheap as chocolate bars, pop and potato chips.
