Tricks to stay motivated on the trainer?
You got them? I need them. So far the only way I've found that really works is putting on my ipod and turning on some really engaging music... this usually leads to a very fast burn out if I keep the music's tempo but if I don't I seem to lose all interest in the trainer.

I try to ride outside all winter. But if the weather is really cold or crappy I just set up the trainer in front of the TV and watch movies. Maybe the workout isn't the best but at least I'm riding.

I don't ride a trainer very much now, but in the past I would do commercial intervals. Turn on the TV to a show you like, ride a bit slower during the show, and then when the commercials come on, ride as hard as you can till they are done and then ride a bit slower to recover during the show, and repeat.

I found a solution that works for now anyhow, I threw my better bike on the trainer instead of the beater and watched AFV.

No ... in fact, if it is really interesting or exciting, I find myself pedalling faster. While I'm watching, I'm spinning fairly comfortably, so I can focus on something else.

Given that winter is supposed to be base I still primarily amuse myself with intervals. 1X1, 5X5, pyramids, etc. That and tempo riding while listening to music.

Set your bike up, turn on the TV, pull up some of the bike races that you recorded on your DVR over the summer, pick one, put on your headset, pick your choice of music, mute the TV and start riding the race that is playing on the TV.

I tried some Spinervals, but Sufferfest is more fun.
But, I sold my trainer. Maybe I would've kept it if I had taped the receipt to it to remind me of how much I spent and to not waste it. Or maybe it would've motivated me to return it a whole lot sooner.

If you're burning out at the tempo you feel like holding, then you're sitting in too high a gear. Ease off the resistance and keep the tempo you find comfortable.
That way you can keep enjoying the music you want to ride to.

I've been riding on a trainer almost exclusively since Thanksgiving (otherwise only short trips/errands). Work and young kids being off from school have all conspired to keep me off the road (I finally got out and did a 5hr ride yesterday though). After ~6 weeks of it, it has become an easy routine, and I'll probably keep doing it until daylight savings time kicks back (with one long ride mid-week).
I have my trainer set up in the garage and have a PC set up in front of it. There is a limitless amount of stuff that can be streamed (or DVD'd) and fill up ~75min. I have a box fan over the display with an infinite-speed controller where I can easily reach it (no wind to full on gale), as well as a glidepoint/touchpad? mouse for the PC.
I did get two of the Sufferfest videos (The Hunted and Local Hero) and do each once a week. I don't mind the music and usually ignore the text. I've got my Sufferfest levels calibrated now that I'm wiped out at the end of Local Hero (pyramid intervals).
I do miss the road, but I can be dressed and on/off the bike in 5min, so it gives me a chance to ride when I wouldn't be able to otherwise.

I survived 2 hours last night by watching snl and flipping between those free music video channels. I was off twice for 5 mins each to adjust things and stretch. Also when a good song came on I would ramp up the pace, So any form of intervals generally makes the time fly.

On my rollers, I have a purpose, program, and goal for every workout. That's enough to hold my interest. Concentration is the mark of a champion, not that I am one, but I try. Concentrate on every moment, your position, your pedal stroke, your power, heart rate, breathing technique. Perfect the moment. Hard to do on the road, easy on a trainer or rollers. One of the nice things about rollers is that both wheels go 'round, so more of your road electronics will work.
