Intervals on Gym Stationary Bike

Due to bad weather and scheduling conflicts, I haven't gone out riding this week and I won't be able to be out on the road next week either.

So I've already put in a good session on the stationary bike yesterday. It's the computerized kind, that allows you to vary the resistance, and it keeps track of cadence, HR, distance traveled, and calories burned. I spent 55 minutes on it yesterday, and my perceived effort was just as hard, if not even harder, than a 20-25 mile road ride with a relatively fast group (20 mph pace). I was POURING sweat all over the place by halfway through the workout. HR in the 150s-170s bpm (I'm 32).

Although I take the "distance traveled" reading on the stationary bike with a grain of salt, it's nice to see. Perceived effort is a more important measure, IMHO.

Do any of you do intervals on a stationary bike and find that it maintains or improves your conditioning during the time that you're unable to go out on the road? I just don't want to lose my fitness and conditioning in the next week or two.

Yes, I have done intervals on the stationary bike... and yes, it will help to maintain your conditioning. Especially if you put some effort into it (and it sounds like you did).

But while the stationary bike might be better than nothing, spinning classes or putting your bicycle on a trainer are better.
