Calorie versus calorie?!
I've been in a discussion with some colleagues at another site and one guy made the following posting:
A rather confusing statement. The issue we're having is over "Calorie" versus "calorie". Which if, I'm guessing right, might have led to a statement that "3,500 calories = 1lb" when in fact it should be "3,500kcals = 1lb".
Semantics perhaps but having proper terminology can be important.
1 Calorie = 1000 calorie = 1 kcal = 4184 Joules
Semantics perhaps but having proper terminology can be important.

If they mean "big" Calorie and it's at the start of a sentence, the "C" will be in a larger typeface, shadowed, bold, and underlined. If handwritten, it'll be in red. If the rest of the sentence is already in red, it will be in whatever shade of deeper red will be gained by adding ultramarine in a ratio of one part blue to every two parts red.

Almost anytime the word 'Calorie' (with or without the capital 'C') is used with regard to food or metabolism, it is synonymous with kilocalorie. Generally, you only encounter 'calorie' (the lowercase one) or kilocalorie in scientific publications.
