    Strength training

    Hey I know some of ya'll use to be big into lifting weights but have cut back for riding purposes. Now that school has started back, I have to choose between the gym or the trails. I have chosen the trails, now my question is what can I do to keep the strength I have and maybe gain a little bit more. Would push-ups and sits-up and just exercises with my own body weight do? I figure I could do some push-ups and what not at home when I get off work, before I start on homework. What do you guys do?

    In your situation I would

    Pushup
    Pullup
    situps

    Will work the entire upper body and leave the legs to the bike

    Man I want to move to Austin....that said if you don't have some free weights then yea do crunches and push-ups. If you can do pull ups too even better. I don't know what they are called but don't forget your lower back as well, I call then reverse crunches. Lie on your belly and stretch out like superman. From this position raise your arms and upper body off the ground and hold for a count then lower. Do reps of these just like crunches to strengthen your lower back. You may want to pick up a cheap set of dumbell freeweights. I have a set that I do curls, tricept extensions, shrugs and other arm exercises with before I get on my trailer...darn cold, wet, snowy north east.

    I always called these hyperextensions when I worked out at the gym.

    I have a bowflex and am actually fairly impressed with it overall. Not the same as free weights, but at least my wife will use this (she wouldn't use free weights).

    read Serious Cycling by,uhhh..., i forget who now, but its a great book for that kind of stuff.
