Am I damaging myself doing this?

I walked outside today for my morning run and looked across our valley and noticed a heavy inversion (pollutants trapped by a low pressure front that condense over days and days until they're so thick you have less than 2 miles of visibility). I decided to run anyway because I'm a creature of habit and I was worried about getting out of my regular rhythm but I'm wondering if anyone has some insight on the adverse affect this could have on my lungs in the short/long term.

Avoid exercising during rush hours (the CO level peaks during rush hours).

• Avoid high cigarette smoking areas prior to and during exercise.

• Avoid combinations of high temperature, humidity and air pollution.

• Keep the amount of time spent in high pollution areas to a minimum (physiological effects of air pollution are both time and dose dependent).

• Be aware of seasonal variations in ozone levels. The ozone level is usually low in winter, increases during summer with a daily peak around 3 p.m., and reaches maximal values in early autumn.

I was once told that running or cycling on a major street during rush hour was like smoking a pack of cigrettes.

I have no idea how true or untrue that may be, but if rush hour is the only time I can get out to excercise, I go anyways.

I try to avoid the busy streets and use side streets, but not always possible.

Huh, so that's why after sex I always have the urge to go ride in heavy traffic!
