Blood Everywhere!

2 weeks ago i had a chest infection that brought along a nasty little cough. With the cough came a horrible cold and occasionally i would blow my nose and there was bits of blood in it. Thursday this week i got to work in the morning after walking and had a really bad nose bleed. The infection was two weeks ago and i'm well over that and the cold. However today i was riding, nothing intense just a slow ride at a HR of 120-140. After about 30 mins my nose was blocking up so i went to spit and as i did i thought it looked red, so i did it again and it was really red. I stopped at some toilets soon after to blow my nose and it was pure blood. It was coming out my mouth too i'm really creeped out by this. I have a doctors appointment but not til the end of the week. In the mean time does anyone know what it is exactly that's likely to be bleeding and what's causing it? On saturday i did a ride of about the same intensity for 3 hours and had no problem. In the last week i haven't hit a HR of over 160 as i'm taking it easy after the infection, at 17 with a Max HR of 203 i don't see 160 as being particualrly intense. What do you guys reckon?

This used to always happen to me before or after a cold, in the dry winter weather. Actually, this happened about once a year until about 2 years ago - profuse, spontaneous bleeding. Having a humidifier in my room while sleeping helped considerably.
Although a sinus infection also seems like a possibility...

Dry winter weather often causes this to happen to me too. About a month ago I actually woke up with a mouthful of blood - now THAT was unsettling. I saw the doctor after that and it turned out to be OK. The dry environment irritates blood vessels. There are lots of blood vessels close to the surface of the nasal passages, and so lots of people have more nosebleeds in the winter. The nasal passages are connected to your mouth too (can you tell I'm not a doctor?), so if blood was coming from both mouth and nose, it could be from the same source. I can understand why you would be concerned after your chest infection. I wouldn't be too concerned, though it's wise to take it easy and see the doctor (as you are doing).

Drink lots of water to stay hydrated, a humidifier will help, and Omega 3,6,9's help with all sorts of dry skin issues, even internally.

A simple saline solution nasal spray may help, too. It will help keep the nasal passages from being so dry, as well as keeping them cleansed.

just take a few days to rest. Even if you dn't want to, it may help all of those irritated places inside of you heal up instead of just scabbing over. I'm going to guess that is what happened.

Hope you feel better soon,

You have ruptured or agrivated some blood vesils in your nasal passage. These are big bleeders. Saline solution will help as wellas a humidifier. My doctor just told me not to blow my nose so hard.
