What type of training plan do you use?
Hi ya,
I am curious to what type of training plan you guys are using, for example:
Periodization - Such as what Joe Friel uses with different periods, base, build, peak etc
Build Repeats - Such as what Chris Carmichael uses in his time crunched book with lot of intervals during 12 week build periods
Year Round Fitness - Basically you remain fit all year round, stick to the same kind of thing week in week out all year
Also is there is a cut off on weekly hours for the type of plan you use, for example:
> 10hrs per week - use Periodization as your getting suffcient hours to make this type of plan work
< 10hrs per week - use Build Repeats as your not getting the hours, so you need the higher intensity workouts to make up for it
Does this kind of work, or have people found periodization works well on less hours, or Build Repeats work well on more hours per week?
Cheers
Gav

I sort of periodize on a Friel-like 400 hour plan. If I don't periodize, I get burned out by the time I need to do the real work. I differ from Friel in that I ride one long group ride a week as hard as I can. Though I also periodize that one to some extent, changing my emphasis from just going hard to specific attacking goals as the high season gets closer. The rest of my workouts are periodized, but not that one so much. I think that works best at my weekly totals.

My training is loosely based on a Friel-style periodization plan. I usually have 1 rest/easy week to every 3-4 intensity/build weeks. My work schedule varies a lot, so in reality my training is often more of the "take what I can get" style.

My training plan:
- Ride lots
- Have fun
- Push yourself
- Try lots of new things to keep it interesting
- Good nutrition
- Plenty of rest

When I have a run or ride goal I’ve found that for me a periodization plan works well to help me be at my best for the goal. I enjoy the process of putting a plan together while knowing it needs some flexibility for work commitments and/or my progress.
After two years of just concentrating on my work I’m preparing for a double century and two brevets this year. The last two years my exercise has been just to keep fit, reduce stress and enjoy the activity and time. Which can also be just as satisfying as my plans for this year.

I'm with the others on the modified periodization.
I generally use periodization at the start of my training schedule to increase my level of fitness. During the build phase of the latter part of my training, I use interval training to focus on increasing my power output. This is where I also mix it up depending on what I want to improve on (sprinting, climbing, etc.).

I like to keep equally fit all year around. I don't race anymore. If I did, my answer would be different.
