feeling awful

so, i did this ride on friday, 65 miles. for me, thats a fairly long ride since coming back from injury a month ago. anyway, so I bonked pretty hard, but I still had an hour to an hour and half left of the ride left. I had to finish the ride, since I was out in the middle of nowhere. so I ate my powerbar and drank both of my bottles and refilled them at a gas station. I got home, creeping along at 14 mph or so. my hr was about 140, way higher then it should've been at that speed.

so anyway, when I got home, I knew that I should eat to recover from the bonk, but my stomach felt really full, stuffed even. but I shoved down some food, and went to bed at like 9:00 on a friday night. that night was awful. I felt like a was running a fever, my whole body felt hot, I had a headache, and my pulse was racing, probably 120bpm or so.

When I woke up though, I felt ok, no fever, but I felt like I was really full, my stomach felt stretched to the limit, and I felt really tired. The 1.5 mile ride to the grocery store was hellishly long feeling. I just couldnt force down hardly any food yesterday. I had a plate of eggs for breakfast, a bowl of cheerios for lunch, and some special K for dinner, and I went to bed early again, feeling kinda crappy.

This morning, I woke up, and I again had the "stuffed" feeling. I went to the dining hall to eat, because I knew that I needed to eat, but I couldn't get much down. half a bagel and half a pancake were all I had, just sort of picked at the other things. and again, I am tired as hell. I just dont get it.

I dont know what the hell is wrong with me. It kinda sounds like overtraining, since I have lost weight recently (intentionally) and I have no appetite, and I'm crazy tired...I just dont get it though, becuase on my ride on wednesday, I felt awesome, cruising at 20-21 mph with seemingly no effort.

anyway, any help is appreciated.

Are your electrolytes in "balance."

Sounds as if maybe you need some gatorade or something like that to replenish them.

Otherwise, if you don't feel better, get thee to a doctor!

Have you been on full spectum antibiotics lately?
They can knock out digestive enzymes and cause digestive problems.
And electrolite ballance as dnvrfox said, can really affect your energy level.

I havent been on any antibotics...and I was under the impression that powerbars had electrolytes in them. also, I've been drinking propel and gatoraide, since I was thinking that possibly the problem could be the electrolyte imbalance.

Hey there..

I live in Raleigh also...there is some wicked flu stuff going around...so far I have avoided it, but you may have a variant strain that you are fighting off...

I overdid it last Saturday and was very tired (and grumpy to my cooks) last Sunday...

I suppose its possible, but I've never had the flu before. I dont have any cold-like symptoms, though, ie, no runny/stuffy noze, itchy eyes, sore throat or cough. but everything else seems to fit. I even have a bit of chest pain, and i've had this crick in my neck since wednesday, I thought it was just from sleeping funny.

damn. looking at this website, https://www.igotflu.com/symptoms.html...it seems that way. ****. I really hope its not the flu.

this is annoying. the only people I've been in contact w/ that have had the flu are the people that were in the waiting room when I was waiting for my thumb x-ray. thats so freakin annoying.

The other thing I was thinking was maybe food poisoning. does anyone know the symptoms of that?

Mild food poisoning is a bloating of the stomach, some muscle cramping. Usually you hurl, but not always.
(Salmomella).
Botchalism poisoning is very dangerous, it is not a live organism, it is a poison\ severe body reaction.
Would require hospitalization.
A mild flu is probably more likely a mild case of salmonella.
Flu may not have cold symptoms, but you will have body ache and I believe your temp drops rather than rising with a cold.
The flu is a week or so, not 3 days of discomfort.

My take on it.
Get well soon.

Chances are you just have the flu - my flus (and I've had too many to count) don't usually have any cold-like symptoms at all, but do have body aches, fever (sometimes a very high fever), stomach ache, nausea, vomiting, etc., etc.

Get lots of sleep. If you've got a fever take some Tylenol to bring it down. Drink lots of cold liquids like water, ginger ale, and yes ... even coke (it'll help relieve that bloated feeling). Chicken noodle soup is also a good choice.

Also, whether it is a flu or whether you've got an electrolyte imbalance, you need to get those electrolytes back in order again. One powerbar on a ride isn't going to do it. This will sound really odd, especially to people who are dieting or trying to stick to a "good" diet, BUT ... go get yourself a small bag of potato chips and slowly eat them. Potato chips are great ... in small quantities. They've got all the electrolytes you need, plus some calories.

And finally, you mentioned a couple times in your post that you "needed" to eat. You don't "need" to eat. You can afford to miss a meal or two now and then, and still survive. If you feel fine aside from this feeling of bloating, try skipping a meal, and eat again when you do feel hungry.

Do the three S's (Sh**, Shower and a Shave) and call me in the morning. That will be $50 US..

Seriously you need to see a Doctor. It would not be uncommon for you to get the flu while on your ride.

I'd see a docter, if I were you.

In the meantime, if you consider other things, like diet, do you think a bowl of cereal and some eggs is really sufficient for you? It may be a good idea for you to get some complex carbs in you and try to get some energy back into your body. I've had some bad bonks, and I usually don't recover until I get some quality carbs back in my body.

Also, have you tried some stretching? I am a big advocate of stretching, and sometimes, if a lot of lactate gets trapped in the legs, it could lead to that wooden feeling in the legs.

If the stretching and complex carbs don't work, and you know you've gotten sufficient rest, then it may be the flu or something like that, so then you can run over to the doctor and see if you've got the flu.

If you don't do the three S's then at least do the first one. Sounds like a good BM will do the trick.

If you can't work things out. No pun. Then Go to the doctor.

For a normal, healthy, person isn't going to the doctor for the flu a little over the top? Take care of yourself, and if it doesn't go away in a normal length of time, by all means see a doctor. Antibiotics are a bad idea unless you really need them.

Totally agree with roadbuzz, whats the idea of running to the doctor for the common cold or the flu. It seems every time people have minor issues the advice is to see a doctor -totally unnecessary, most doctors actually have really sick people to see instead of all the 25-40 year olds who thinks that viruses are treated with antibiotics.

yea, I was thinking that, actaully. It is such a pain in the ass to go to the doctor these days with my mom's insurance plan. After I go to the doctor, I need to do like 2 hours worth of paperwork to make a claim, I cant just get the insurance to cover it regualrly, since I'm at school. Either that, or I scan the reciepts and have my mom do the same two hours of work and crap that I had to do. Theres got to be a better way. I dont want to turn this into a political discussion thread, though.

anyway, I'm feeling a lot better today...so I dont think it was the flu. I AM curious about the fever that I had.

anyway, I'm going to go riding today, and not really push it too hard. sort of a diagnostic ride.
