Shortness of Breath
Hi All,
I am a 28 year old male in general good health and have been enjoying my road cycling over the past 3 weeks or so.
I did a 100km ride yesterday with some quite steep climbs and felt great during and immediately after the ride. However when I was laying down in bed last night I started to have a feeling like my breathing wasn't as easy as normal.
I have been breathing in "manual" mode ever since like I can't just let my body do it automatically and although I don't feel faint or anything my breathing is not as easy as normal.
I am going to see my doctor this afternoon but would be interested to know if anyone else has had similar symptoms, not during, but after a ride?
Thanks

1) Have the Dr send you for lung tests to test for EIA (Exercise Induced Asthma)
2) Talk to the Dr about the possibility of blood clots.
Have you taken a long flight recently?

thanks for response Machka
I looked up EIA and it sounds like it normally starts 5-20 minutes after beginning exercise so not sure I fit in that category so well.
I haven't taken any long flights recently but will discuss clot with the doctor. So strange!

There are also many food-allergies that can trigger asthma or predispose you for EIA.
Look for a lab that can perform an elisa microtiter assay test for delayed food allergies.
With the results, you can then do an elimination-diet to test which foods are the worse for your breathing.
Could also be overtraining. Doing a 100km ride with steep climbs within 3-weeks of starting cycling is a bit much for most people. Depending upon your fitness-level going in of course. You can notice signs of overtraining your cardiovascular system by monitoring your waking and resting HR daily. Overtraining cardio will be indicated by higher than average waking and resting HR. Also recovery-rate from max-HR.
At which point, you can work on muscular system (strength training & springs), or the energy systems with long endurance rides at easy pace.
