Leg cramps and joint aches after eating doughnuts

Well, the title says it all: if I eat a few doughnuts, a few hours later I get nearly incapacitating painful leg cramps and my knees/elbows/occasionally other joints start aching.

Obviously the easy solution is to stop eating doughnuts, but no one else I know deals with this sort of issue... I want to make sure there's not something else going on.

Anyone experience this? Any thoughts on what it could be?

Doughnuts always seem like a good idea, but...

Obviously, your doughnut consumption threshold needs work.

Obviously.

I recommend interval workouts - intense interval workouts.

My guess (based on being medically unqualified, so it's worth what you paid for it) is that it's some kind of allergic reaction to something in the doughnuts.

Does it happen with any doughnut, or just certain types/brands/fillings?

Hope you're not a LEO, as incapacity to consume donuts would be disqualifying.

Seriously though, there's nothing unique to donuts that you wouldn't find in many other foods. It'd probably be good to figure out what ingredient is causing the problem.

Who eats "a few doughnuts" regularly enough to notice the pattern? I mean, sometimes someone will bring doughnuts in to the office and I'll have ONE because I mean, free doughtnuts! But a FEW? In one sitting?

That said, I know a couple people with celiac's, which seems to be the new hotness in designer ailment, and joint pain is a common symptom.

suggest doing donut intervals - to raise your DT (donut threshold)

Ah, you guys are so fun!

The blood sugar thing is a little scary... I'm young, poor and foolish, so I don't have a doctor (probably why I'm getting my nutritional advice from Bikeforums ) I suppose I'll have to figure something a bit more official out.

I'm in a program where all my classes are with the same guys. If a phone goes off, he has to bring doughnuts in... It's a fairly normal occurrence, and my "Free food! Stock up!" syndrome overtakes all other thoughts. I guess that's +1 for blood sugar stuff as my normal diet has almost no high sugar foods or refined carbs in it whatsoever...

Be it a maple bar, old fashioned, or frosted cake from local bakeries, Krispy Kreme, or Safeway, it nails me in ~2 hours

It's NOT celiac. Even if it is... I refuse to fall into the ranks of breadless, pastaless souls who's future happiness is found in rice and the declarations of their doctors! I will not surrender my Dinkelbrot

(For those of you who have successfully overcome the pains of removing gluten from your diet, I applaud you)

Thanks for the help, ladies and gents.

Nick,

Is this only after eating these particular doughnuts or after any large, simple carbohydrate meal? Can you test that out?

Really hate to interrupt the entertaining comedy, but you really shouldn't eat doughnuts. No one should eat them, not ever. And that goes for anything else consisting primarily of refined sugar and lard. Try some yogurt, fruit or leafy greens instead as a pre-ride snack. I'm guessing your cramp problems will soon disappear. But if you really must, maybe combine it with a triple espresso, a cigar and electrolyte supplement.

Really, I hardly ever eat simple carbs; the worst I get is spelt pasta and maybe oatmeal. I don't have anything around to check, so I guess I don't know... Sorry.

Sounds fantastic... Mmm. Might have to give it a go

I went in to a clinic after a prolonged episode (Thurs-Sun) and they ran some blood tests... I'll report when they come in. Blood sugar looks good, but systolic pressure spikes while I'm cramping (up to 190 )... We'll see. I'm on a low carb, no added sugar diet emphasizing magnesium, potassium and electrolyte balance until the lab work comes back, and feeling a little better. This last time around was a bit worse, so donuts are definitely out :/

No other choice for this problem it's an allergy. my bro got similar problem he stopped to eat doughnuts. This is only the better option, if not use any supplements for knee pain when ever you eat doughnuts then, because that time you definitely get knee pain

Probably psychological.

Immune system response does not affect the skeletal system in that it would cause pain. And if there was inflammation secondary to an immune response, the facial edema and other edemas would make it obvious that this is an allergic response. In layman's terms: Not an allergic reaction.

Could be arthritic pain, gout, or a number of other different things, but I seriously doubt the fact that donuts cause your knee to hurt. It's quite humorous to make that notion.

The blood test came back and something's messed up with my liver. The doughnuts caused my blood pressure to go up enough that the high blood pressure interacted with my liver, causing muscles that were exercised (ie my legs) to have severe pains. I don't know how, I don't know why, but that's that. Turns out copious amounts of coffee does it too.

So I just won't eat donuts. No big deal.

And, boy, if it's arthritis, I hate to see what state I'll be in when I turn 20. Probably be in a wheelchair by then... Thanks for the input, though. 'Twas useful.

Good thing you didn't try the triple espresso, cigar and electrolytes solution. Maybe reconsider leafy greens or fruit as a ride snack.

What's good is you're young, and learning this lesson before weighing "lot's" is invaluable, if "it" were a pill, it would be invaluable, ah, life.
