Where to do intervals?

After my last thread and my car incident I am second guessing the idea of intervals on the road (well at least roads with cars). Other than hill work I tend to do all intervals (other than crit (sprinting) intervals) on the trainer. That way I can focus on pushing myself to the limit without cars. Where do you all do your interval (non hill training)? Do you use a calm road with little traffic or have another way?

Wherever you can get them done. I do intervals on the streets- from light to light, or outrunning buses and traffic. Other times, I do them indoors. The point is to find a place to do them and make sure you're doing them right, in my opinion.

A rural road where you have plenty of distance between stop signs or traffic lights is ideal. Less traffic and no requirement to stop in the middle of a set.

I have a road I use that is pancake flat (5 total feet of elevation gain/loss over 3.75 miles) that runs along a river. It's 7.5 miles out and back with no stop signs and very little traffic at non-peak times and a manageable amount during "rush hour" times. I would say that on a normal day there, I'll see as many cyclits as cars. My ride to get there takes around 40-45 minutes at a warm up pace. It's perfect for any interval training that doesn't require climbing.

It's also used for a time trail series that runs throughout the summer months.
