Alternative to sweet tasting energy gels
Hi,
Does anyone know of an alternative to the sweet tasting energy gels out there as a source of instant energy? I typically use GU or Powerbar energy gels but the sweet taste doesn't agree with my stomach. Same with energy drinks. I can handle a sour tasting energy drink but not sweet. Any suggestions for alternatives to the sweet gels?

I know performancebike.com has tons of different types of energy gels, some, clif shot for example, claim they are less sweet then the others. I used to just eat honey, but I'm guessing that would be too sweet as well.I think gu also has a "plain" flavor, I don't know if this is less sweet or not. If you cant find an alternate gel at performance you could take the step of making your own. Most of them are just water, maltodextrin, and whatevery herbal additives are considered hip at the time. I'm sure a health food store or a beer supply store would have maltodextrin that you could buy and mix it with water.

You're not the only one -- my first experience with GU was at at mile 6 of a (foot) race; I spent the next half mile feeling like I'd just eaten a honeypot. I tried a few but couldn't find one that I liked, so I went back to bars. Hope you find a better answer!

GU does have a "flavor" that is plain. To the best of my recollection, it has no taste. But I'll add it's been a few years since I've use GU. I use real honey.

Check to make sure that your not consuming High Fructose Corn Syrup. This product can and does cause stomach problems. It is a poor substitute for real sugar as our body’s don’t recognize it as a real (whole) food. Try a simple search of HFCS. It may surprise you.

Try clifshots. They're very mildly sweet.
Or maybe it's bout time they made a buckley's flavored gel...

Just ride.
I know Hammer and Gu have "unflavored" gels... specifically for people who want to miinimize the sweet thang.
Both are good products.

I usually swig some water before swallowing the gel anyway, so that waters it down enough. Also remember to follow instructions and drink a bunch of water afterwards to dissolve and dilute the gel so you can absorb it easier.
