The chocolate on their protein bars can melt and be a bit messy. You just have to be careful not to get it all over you. I only take these on 3-4 hour rides.

You can look at the Quest Bars. Not sure how they will hold up, but they seem denser than Cliff, and taste better IMO

I know you didn't ask me, but I have a recipe to share.

Melt one of these in a pan under low-heat. Make sure you don't burn/toast it (don't let it turn brown). This will be the base of the bar. You can add anything you like to it. I added cacao nibs, coconut sugar, a little coffee and salt.

Dump the mixture in a tray such that it's at least 0.5 inch thick. Put it in the refrigerator until it hardens, then cut it into pieces. This is the hardest part as it breaks easily. I'm going to try using this next time: Amazon.com: Freshware 12-Cavity Silicone Petite Loaf Pan: Kitchen & Dining

Here's how it looks: https://scontent-b-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/...00795434_o.jpg

Never mind this for summer months! I brought one out today and it melted completely. It's great for sub ~65F, though.

Another vote for Fig Newtons and bananas. On a 6+ hour ride, I may eat 30 of them and three bananas. Gets me back to the car with energy to spare.

I only ever liked one flavour of Clif Bar. I found the rest to be too dry and hard to eat. That flavour had coffee beans and chocolate chips in it.

And then one day, I rode through a swarm of bugs/beetles that very closely resembled coffee beans, hard shells and about the same size and colour. They were everywhere and went on for a long time. Kilometre after kilometre I was in a cloud of these things. They were in my helmet, crawling down my neck, in my mouth ...

I finally broke through the cloud and cleared them all out from my hair and everywhere else.

At the next stop, I rummaged through my bag for something to eat and the only thing I had was one of those Clif Bars. But I couldn't eat it. The coffee beans reminded me too much of all those bugs/beetles.

I haven't touched a Clif Bar since.
