Thanks.

I prefer Power Bar gel packs. I once consumed about 25 of them on a day hike to Mnt Whitney peak. Goo is also good. If you buy the power bar gels at Sport Chalet they punch a hole in the tab to hang them on pegs in their display and they invariably leak all over your pockets. I buy them at other stores because of that.

I think most of the gels contain similar ingredients so it's just a matter of taste preference for me. I like the chocolate Power Gels and GU sells a chocolate mint flavor at Christmas that I really like.

I like the huckleberry flavor of the Hammer gel. It tastes like blueberry filling of a Dunkin Donut. Since all you're doing with a gel is shooting some sugar into your gut, I don't think it matters, as long as it tastes good to you.

Why isn't there a Dunkin Donut store in the middle of nowhere when I go for a long ride?

If by "works" you mean contain sugar and restore some calories then all of them. I prefer the taste of the GU brand stuff.

The nice thing about Hammer Gel is that you can buy it in pints and decant it into 6 serving flasks, which Hammer happens to sell. No wrapper, no mess, no lost gel. It's like drinking out of a water bottle. Flask goes in a jersey pocket, or Hammer also sells a stem mount for it.

Many of the gel brands taste like medicine or chemicals to me -- but Hammer gels and GU gels taste yummy.

Helpful comparison information to other available products here.....Crank Sports - e-Gel Electrolyte Energy Gel and e-Fuel Electrolyte Sports Drink - Home .. .., with great consistency and flavors.

As mentioned, gels supplied quickly digested and metabolized carbs (AKA sugars) and some sodium and potassium. A few include relatively inconsequential amounts (<100 mg) of caffeine, inconsequential for me anyway as I drink a lot of coffee and am relatively inured to caffeine's effects.

For a longer ride bring a banana, a few gels, and maybe a couple of fig newtons which are all pretty equivalent in for energy purposes.

They are sugar. If it's got sugar it works.
