Training schedule for first century but also running????

Hi all. I am hoping to complete a century on September 7 which gives me 11 weeks to prepare. I am out of bike shape, have been focusing on running over the past year, and my long ride is at 20 miles. I also run several days a week and am working toward a half marathon, but with mileage closer to marathon (long story, trying to get faster) in October.

My trouble is fitting everything in. Does anyone have any tips for century training without giving up running? If you run four days per week how many rides do you think you have to have? Is three enough? Two?

Thanks.

Wow. I don't know if I posted this in the wrong spot or what. Surely there are people here that ride and run. I just need some suggestions or examples (even better) of what your week looks like.

I only pound the pavement 3 days a week in preparation for IMFL due to bad knees. I ride 3 days a week for the 112 miles of biking. Depending on your priorities regarding finishing times, spend more time on the bike to build base for the century.

I include the swimming on the pavement pounding days.

So do you suggest that I come up with my max bike mileage per week and just divide it between the number of days I can ride with one of the rides being longer than the others? That sounds easier than me trying to figure out mileage per ride and sounds more flexible. Thanks!

I found that the longer times out on the bike helped to make half marathon and marathon events easier due to the increased time spent in high aerobic exercise time. Five hours of biking at a good effort/pace make the half marathon time feel like a 10K once the base miles are there.

Honestly, when I first started triathlons, a 70.3 or stand alone half marathon were a little intimidating. Even listening to much younger athletes, many were up-tight. Now I feel they are only a warm up type of event. Use the bike to make everything else a piece of cake.

Good luck and HAVE FUN!!!

Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to respond. I hadn't even considered the bike helping my runs. I am a slow runner and really want to get faster so if the bike helps..great!!
