New to the whole thing

Well I am brand new to cycling and I need to get in shape!! Im 19 and I used to do cross country in high school, so I just need to get some endurance back. I have somewhat of a wind but not nearly enough, I can only run 3 miles at a 7 min pace I got involved with this from a coworker who is getting in shape and wants to do the Elephant Rock race. Now I am out of shape and I still use the diet I used in cross country which was NO diet at all. I want to be nice and lean and I am hoping to get in shape by June, its a 100 mile race, and I am not there to win it I just want to be able to finish it. Now I have never ridden to get in shape or anything like that so I am completely new. Any ideas on how to train for endurance and speed?? Thanks a ton. And sorry for being such a newbie, now flame on if you must

There are plenty of ideas, you need a place to start. This series of articles wre written for people who want to do the Death Valley Race, but the concepts are universal.

You should first start to regain your base by doing long, low intensity rides to get your aerobic base and familiarity with the bike. After a month or so you could start increasing the mileage and gradually increase it for the century. You should'nt start any serious training yet, especially because you won't need high intensity strength in an endurance race such as a century.
