my name's jimmy from the philippines. I will be using this thread as a journal--to record my training rides, distance, nutrition, goals, etc.

thanks for stopping by.

Jimmy

PS.
Some of you may not be familiar with the locations i'll be mentioning in these threads, but i write them down as a reference on how far i go from point a to point b and the time it took me to get there; in short, for record keeping purposes. Best regards!

i used to ride a lot a few years ago, then i stopped and the weight started piling in. After two weeks of tinkering with it, i finally got my road bike back into mint condition.

my goal in the coming months is to lose weight. I now weigh 175 (5'7") and my target weight is 140 pounds. I have time to train mornings, and i'm thinking of riding my bike to work to supplement my training.

i didn't train this morning. baby was up all night and i decided to get up late in the morning. when i got up, i helped my kids to learn how to ride their bikes without the training wheels on. Now two of them (i got 3 girls plus one baby boy) can bike without the trainers!

maybe i can train a bit when i get home tonight.

i don't have access to a reliable weighing scale, so it'd be better if i went through my weightloss by measuring my waistline instead. started the program at 37".

can anyone help?

how come all of my entries have been crossed out? Is this kind of training journal not allowed here?

kyuzo 04-01-05 12:58 AM

looking at the other threads, i guess it is not only mine that has the letters crossed out.

i rode my bike going to work. it's about 5 km from where i live and it took me 20 minutes one way. pace was relatively slow as it was 2 in the afternoon when i left the house--terribly hot! I'll be riding back a longer route on my way home later pushing it up a bit.

titanium 04-02-05 02:38 PM

haha, you seem cool and im bored so ill try and help you. Firstly to loose weight, dony starve yourself, eat enough, just not too much and very importantly reduce the intake of fat to a minimum, and get out on the bike a lot. Do not push your self to the point of over training at the start, although you are know where near that point. I see you are tied down with family, so what you should do is cycle to work, trying to go rather fast, building up the speed as you go, or even take a less direct route. ON saturday or sunday if you got time, im ausming you have, try and go out for a ride, go with a local group its ok to start low you want to work up to a longer distaance 50 miles or so at faster paces, if you cant do this dont wory, notice i did say you want to work up to this meaning if you cant do that right now thats no big deal. If you do 10km a day or even an indirect route so you do 15km or so a day, its a good start and combined with the ride on the weekend it will be good. Work up to this, it should keep you bust to have you doing all that at high speed. I would suggest that say, on mondays after a hard ride on sunday, you take it very easy cycling to work, you do want to push your self too hard. i hope i have been of some help to you.

thanks for the input titanium.

i wasn't able to post these past few days about my rides. i've been out riding, but i have been busy. I'm also taking up a martial art--katori shinto ryu, and our teacher arrived from japan april 1. i've been riding from home to the dojo each time since april 1st. i ride my bike in the morning going to the dojo and it takes me, on average, less than an hour, about 55 minutes. i don't have an odometer with me, so i have no idea what the distance is. My pace is pretty slow, if you saw me pedalling by, you'd say i was going on a leisurely ride. this so i will have fresh legs for martial art training.

we have three training sessions each day, late morning, afternoon and at night. i took time off from my business just so i can attend these sessions. it's very intence training. so at the end of the day, i just ask my wife to come pick me up and i place my bike in the trunk.

sounds like the marital arts is very serious, you sure are spending a lot of time on it, a lot more then the large majority of us cycle. Spending so much time in it does not leave you with much left, is this temporary these lessona? for a few months or somtinhg? because you need to put cyclingon hold whilst you do this, or you will over train its just too much and oyu dont even have time. I guess just do what your doing commute at a slow pace, if this thing is for the long run your going to have to put cycling on hold, there is no way you can be serious with cycling when you are so serious with somthing else aswell!

titanium--i've been doing martial arts since 1998, around the time i stopped cycling. The reason i stopped is because i had so many stuff i had to bring with me that it was safer for me to commute than to ride my bike. This time, i have less stuff that i can ride my bike.

Our teacher just left the country yesterday. Practice sessions are back to twice a week 2 hours each. I have permission from my wife that i'd be riding more this weekend, one in the morning and another session in the afternoon.

Except for friday and saturday, which was rest days for me, i rode 1 hour each day for the past few days. I've started adding some distance into my rides this time, but the pace still remains slow and leisurely. I haven't weighed myself yet but i've already lost half an inch from my waist last friday.

my wife left for a business trip this morning, so today is rest day for me. after leaving the kids with their nannies, i rode my bike to work, which was a short 20 minute ride from where i live.

kyuzo 04-13-05 02:43 AM

i'm glad i got my bike back in mint condition. this way, i get to ride to work or doing errands. I just sit in front of the computer when i work, and the bike ride to work and back gets my blood flowing. This way, i get some physical conditioning done instead of just sitting on the commute.

i now have another reason to look forward to the weekends, i can ride my bike further than the usual route to work. But first thing's first--i need to get my endurance back so i can enjoy these long weekend rides better.

i woke up this morning and felt my tummy wasn't as bloated as it did before, so i measured myself. It was at 36". Since i've started this thread, i've already lost an inch! I'm ecstatic about this, but i'll consider that permanent if i can keep that 36" over the weekend.

Today is still a rest day for me. I just rode from home to sta lucia (that's where i do run my business). It's a 20 minute bike ride from home, on an easy pace.

my wife is gonna be back from her business trip by tonight, so that means i can get back to training by tomorrow morning.

have a nice day!

weird... i measured my waist this morning and it is now at 35"3/4. i haven't been on the bike or done any training since yesterday, aside from the bike ride to work.

i rode my bike saturday morning, more so than in the previous days. after about an hour on the bike, i felt a pain on my trapezius, this is the muscle where your shoulders and neck meet. when i got home, i asked my wife to massage the affected muscles. It felt so tight and painful.

I read somewhere that i should make adjustments to the handlebar stem to solve this problem. Then there was another article that the shoulder-neck pain can be avoided if the rider were to add miles a little at a time. Since i just got back into training, i think the pain was caused by trying to ride much more than i was used to.

sunday, i just rode one hour in the morning--slow and easy. The pain was still there, but not as bad as it was saturday.

kyuzo 04-18-05 11:16 PM

april 19, tuesday

i did some adjustments both to the handlebar stem and moved the saddle a bit forward. the ride yesterday morning goign to work was good, no pain on my shoulders. In the afternoon, i decided to ride again to aikido practice, which was at the phil heart center, 17 kilometers away. I got there and the shoulder was still good. i think the adjustment i made worked pretty well.

this morning, i decided to run instead of riding my bike for a change. i did about 3k on a slow and easy pace. Around lunch time, i rode my bike again to work.

My waistline seems to hold around 36". That's pretty good, for now. I'm aiming for around 30" by the end of the year. We'll see what happens.

kyuzo 04-19-05 11:21 PM

april 20, wednesday

rest day today. Rode my bike to work and i think the adjustments i made on the stem and saddle did my shoulder a lot of good. I don't feel any discomfort from them at all while riding (or maybe it was the massage i got from my wife? :) ).

i've been riding most everyday of the week, one hour at least. with more rides on mondays and wednesdays than on weekends. i feel like i can climb better these days than i did when i got started a month before. that's good. my waist is still hovering around 36" though.
