Another 'what could this pain be?' thread
Hi all,
I've been riding for about 4 or 5 years now, and I have a pain that I haven't experienced before. It's an ache right below my right glute, that gets worse the longer I ride. I have a hybrid, so I'm not in the bent-over position when I ride.
I don't notice anything on the skin, and it feels 'deep', as opposed to something on the skin surface. It's closer to my inner thigh than my outer thigh.
I have an anti-inflammatory that I take for knee pain (man, it sucks to get old :-) ). Once in awhile I'll forget to take it, and I notice that the glute pain is worse.
For shorter rides, I don't always wear bike shorts. It started happening earlier in the summer, before my rides got to where they are not (30 to 40 miles).
I also worked on getting a better fit on my bike; I raised the seat a good bit, and I noticed that, when riding hard, I seemed to slide back in the saddle, so that the back edge was pushing on that area. I've adjusted the saddle, but it hasn't gotten any better.
I know that I should see a doctor; I'm just speculating on what it could be.
Thanks in advance,
Phil

My guess is that you pulled a muscle. Also possible you strained a ligament. I wouldn't worry for now: just try not to make it hurt bad. A little discomfort is probably fine, pain not. Ibuprofen 3X/day for a few days may clear it up. Or not, if it's a ligament. If it were me, I wouldn't bother my doc unless it persists, doesn't respond to ibuprofen, or gets worse.

It sounds like the upper part of the semitendonosus hamstring is irritated, and for whatever reason hamstrings are slow to heal. I'd try to speed things along with some very gentle stretching, and maybe lower the saddle or tilt the nose down until the pain is gone. I've had this issue with modern light weight saddles.
