    Ready for the relay!!

Up until Saturday it was still up in the air of whether or not I would be in this one! We had the swimmer (me) and my biker totally on board. But my runner would not return anybody's phone calls! I called 5 times and left mesages, and my other friend tried three times over the previous month, no dice. She had told a mutual friend on Labor Day that she was still planning on it, but still wouldn't confirm to me. So finally I took matters into my own hands and found another runner. It was obvious to me she was flaking out big time...so forget it!!

Anyway...now I have my team! Two in fact. I have a men's team and a women's team. I'm totally stoked!! This will be my first relay. I have done sprints before, but never an olympic. The only thing holding me back was my run. I only barely hang with a 5k, I knew for sure a 10k would likely kill me! Or at the very least make me very unhappy.

My friend had the same issues with swimming...so it was a logical solution! I'm ready for the swim. It's a .9 mile lake swim. Saturday we trained at Lake Grapevine at 7:00. If you are local, you may know how windy it was on Saturday!! Great training conditions. Felt like a sock in a washing machiene, but it was fun anyway. One of my most difficult swims ever. I can't imagine it being worse then that on Sunday! So I'll let you know how I fare!

multisport relays are a blast; we have 2 here in Washington at the end of ski season that are hugely popular (Ridge to River and Ski to Sea). They both have `iron' categories for those hardy souls that do all the legs themselves (probably a high percentage of triathletes in this category for these races).

I think they are great races, in that they encourage participation by people that might not want to do the whole thing by themselves. From what I've been reading over at slowtwitch.com, some folks are dismayed (to put some reactions mildly) over the intrusion of teams into what they think is supposed to be a solo event - see this thread, for example: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.c...=unread#unread

Anyway, have a great time - no need to pace yourself for just one leg

For sure...I've said it before and I'll say it again...me no likey to run!! I'll swim and bike my tail off...but please don't make me run!

Oh...and to make matters worse, my second runner flaked out on us too! So I was near tears, thought for sure we couldn't find anyone else with only 4 days to the event. Nevertheless...the triathlon gods were smiling on us. My friend who is cycling was talking to her neighbor about it, and he agreed to run with us. Here is the good part...this dude is an ultramarathon runner. He runs 12 miles a day! Straight! No way Jose!! He ran a 100k once. That would kill me...I'm pretty convinced of it. So 10k is literally a walk in the park. We're all excited once again.

The race was awesome! Great weather for it. I'm pleased with my leg of the race. My teams total time was 3:18. I finished the swim in 40:30 which I am happy with. My goal was sub 40 so good enough!!

My runner was booking! So glad I didn't have to run. He finished his leg in 52:30. I'm all about the relay! I'll definately do it again. Next time I think I'll swim/bike then find a runner again. Or I'll find an aqua bike event. There is one coming up in September of next year 1.2 mile swim and 56 mile bike! I'm all over it! Have 11 months to get ready.

    They did well. 2:46:09.

    swim 29:05
    bike 1:16:29
    run 56:44

I was pleased all around! This was the first olympic distance for the biker, and the first ever triathlon for the swimmer and runner.
