The guy who has it might be too stupid to know the value of the bike. Though you might have to swallow hard, possibly you could buy it for some low figure. The guy who has it now, might have bought it from someone else, or, if not, you might get added information without tipping your hand as to who you are.

We'd be willing to do that if we could find him. We don't know where he is and he hasn't offered the bike up for sale. The bike shop told us that he's using it as transportation.

It was folks from CNN that tracked him down after the FEMA folks lost him in the system, which was a nightmare.

You aren't going to believe this, but I'm in the media, unfortunately, just not in Colorado. I called Denver and pitched the story. They weren't interested. I was shocked. Then I called them back and pitched it on a different angle. My first pitch was that that Denver had a huge bike theft problem and it appeared from my research that they didn't have very good recovery stats or even a response from the PD. When Roger called the PD after leaving flyers with a detailed description of his bike, a phone number and name of an individual who had seen the bike two days later, it appeared that the PD was not interested in following up. In fact, they told him that they were too busy to talk to him and wouldn't return his phone calls. Turns out that they have ONE officer who does bike theft. He used to have an assistant and they took the assistant and use them in another department.

I was told that the PD is short staffed and is only interested in major crimes like **** and murder. What?? And the taxpayers are accepting of that? Apparently so, I was told. So, that was my second angle, complancency. They didn't buy that either. My guys loved it. In fact, one of my reporters started calling the PD to check the bike theft problem in Dallas to see if it's a story here!

I if was a taxpayer in Denver, I'd be raising heqq right now.
