First duathlon report

So I wussed out and signed up for the team division since I never run. My other friends who signed up gave me a lot of crap for "paying someone to run" for me.
My partner ran her first 5k leg in a personal best time. She's never run more than 6k at a time. I hope not to let her down and finish my part of the race.

Then it comes time for my ride.
It starts off with a short downhill section followed by a 90 degree turn and a 5% grade for about 3/4 mile. I try resisting the urge to burn through it and spin but of course with the adrenaline I pushed it slightly more than I should have. When you see people ahead of you, you can't help but want to pass them all even if it means possibly burning up. I calm down for the rest of the first lap (mouth wide open, drool frothing down my face) and start thinking about how to use my energy for the second. This time around on that first hill, I decide to spin my way up and then turn it up for the remaining 6 miles at the top. Well as I downshift, the my chain pops off the small ring, gets sucked into my spokes, and RIPS THE REAR DERAILLEUR OFF! It was the most horrible sound I've ever heard. SNAP!!!! My immediate thoughts were "CRAP! I've totally let down my partner." Followed by "Hmmm, maybe I can run with my bike for the last 7 miles." Yeah right.

Well my other friends who entered did fairly well. One of them actually won his age division. And it was unbelievable considering the fact that we downed two pitchers of beer followed by Jager shots the night before. Plus he had a cigarette or two before bed. And on top of it all, when we woke up, he realized that he LEFT HIS RUNNING AND CYCLING SHOES AT HOME!!! So not only does he complete the race, but wins it using my hiking shoes that are a half size too large. Tooooo funny.

I cannot wait for the next one. This time I'm gonna do the running myself.
