Metroplex Sprint Race Report

Today was my 4th race of the year, the Ironhead Metroplex sprint in Grand Prarie, TX(sub-burb of Dallas/Ft. Worth) at Joe Pool Lake . I've done 2 sprints and an Oly before this one. Today's race was a 800m swim, 16m bike, and 5k run. This race last year was my first tri ever so it was good to get back to it and see how much I've improved. Today was also my first race with my new QR Kilo tri bike. I was using an old Trek road bike up until about 3 weeks ago.

My goal for the day was to complete the swim in 16 min or less, have a 20mph average or higher on the bike, and break a 10min/mile pace on the run. I'm not fast, but still have fun racing and trying to improve. A secondary goal was to beat my wife's boss who was also at this race and another of mine last year where he beat me easily.

The swim was not bad. I stayed way out to the side and had a pretty uneventful swim. No kicks or anything for once. I still have a problem with going too fast in a race and getting worn out quickly and needing rest by doing some back stroke for a bit. Still working on that. Into T1 and on to the bike.

I was excited to see how my new bike performed. The course is flat and fast. It is basically an out and back. Right turn out of the park, U-turn after a few miles, another U-turn after some more miles, then a right turn back into the park. The bike was uneventful as the swim which I like. There was a nice paceline of about 8 guys that blew past me though. I used a PD aero-drink bottle. Not sure if I like it though. Makes me have to burp for some reason. Making the sucking required instead of the usual squirting of a water bottle. Into T2 and out on the run.

I'm not a good runner by any means but have been steadily getting better. My legs were no where near as tired and sore off the bike with new my tri bike. This is good news. Run was uneventful as well. I was fighting off a stitch coming but it never hurt enough to make me stop running which was good.

Results:
16:06 on the swim --- 2:01/100m
47:16 on the bike --- 21.3 mph
28:34 on the run ---- 9:09/mile
1:34:43 total

Beat last years goal by 14 minutes. Also beat the wifes boss by 42 seconds. Wife also bested her last years time by 11 minutes. It was a fun day with a good weather and good racing. Wish all weekends were like this one.
