Does anybody else wish they could transfer some cycling fitness to the other areas?

So anyways the last triathlon was back at the beginning of May 2007 and since then i haven't done any swimming or running. I have been piling on the miles with cycling though.

I finally got back into the pool last night to get ready for another triathlon at the end of September and to my suprise i wasn't as bad as i thought i would be. The muscles are a bit sore (mostly my chest and back) but my cardio was in good shape since i could still manage breathing every 3 strokes with ease.

But dangit, sometimes i really do wish i could just take a chunk of my cycling fitness and allocate it to my swim and run fitness.

I only do the occassional triathlon. When I do, my cycling performance is so far above my extremely challenged swimming and running, its a joke.

I'll be DFL out of the water; Pass most all but the elite on the bike, only to be passed myself on the run.

it should be interesting to see how much first real tri goes in a couple weeks (sprint distance). but ive managed to keep a pretty even training regimen including all the weight lifting i love to do. my long swims are 1 mile, long bikes are 45 and long runs are 10-12. hoping to be ready to finish an olympic tri in november. the thing thats going to help me the most is to finish losing the extra weight im carrying around.

I've had a bit of a different experience. i think biking endurance (I still ain't so fast) was one of my limiters so I worked a lot on that this year and it's helped my running quite a bit. Still have to put in miles running, but I only run 3 times a week and I'm faster than I used to be.

I just swam tonight for the first time in three months (crappy weather), and I have to say I felt surprisingly good. My general fitness level from all that cycling and running seems to have helped a lot, despite what little upper body muscle mass I previously had having atrophied.

Over the fall, as the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, I'm going to gradually shift my training from cycling & running to swimming/running, and try to keep swimming at least twice a week next spring into the summer as I ramp up for my first tri.

I read an article at beginnertriathlete.com that said that maintaining a 85+ cadence on your biking can help you run faster by getting your legs used to operating at the higher cadence.
    Always a work in progress....
