I mashed the button on Placid.
After processing fees, less than $5 short of $500
I wonder where that money goes

I had one of those non-obligation form numbers from standing in line, back when I was up in the north country. I actually found the money and signed up on the 27th (the final day according to the form.)
And I'm not blurring out my name or nothing on that registration confirmation. You all make sure to look up my time after the race. And I'll be honest about my race goal also. One person said I should aim just to finish, but I really want to go to Kona.

Is this your first time?
trust me, aim to finish, esp. in lake placid.
That is a hard, very competitve ( I know they all are) race.

I may not be 20 anymore, but I should be able to get back some of the form of my youth, when all these things came relatively easy. Wish me luck or tell me "No F'n way" both are welcome motivation!!

Well then I'll shoot for a sub 6 then. That's 45 min swim, 3 hr ride, 10 min miles. Doesn't sound bad on paper!!

3 years? Unless you're morbidly obese right now I'd be aiming sub 5. Just for a bit of perspective, I did my first HIM Aug 12th on 4 months of serious training, dropping from 205lbs to 185lbs in the process. I finished in 5:49. That's literally straight from the couch too.
Special, best of luck to you, but i would bet the house you don't make Kona the first few times out. Not a knock against you, and you might be some freak of nature, but i knew career tri guys that are lightning fast and still dont qualify. Placid is arguably the toughest IM course anywhere with all those hills....and no matter how fast you are, even the experienced guys will tell you that the first order of business is always just finishing.
Im doing wisconsin in 08, and will be entering the Kona lottery. If i luck out and get a spot, Wis will be my qualifying race.

I'm currently 250lbs and when I was in "shape" I fluxed between 215 and 230, depending on the pizza and beer intake. I trained to run in forever. When I do a 5k now it hurts a lot. I can ride with a 17-20 mph group for about 25-30 miles depending on terrain. A solo effort for 50 miles would produce 15-16 mph avg. Lord know if I can still swim a lick. The big thing for me is gonna be the mental aspect and the endurance. My endurance currently BLOWS!! But your words are an inspiration. So what's a good goal time for an Olympic next year?

I think if you train seriously, you can go sub 3. I train with a guy who is 225 and he went sub 3 in his first oly this year. He was obviously heavier when he started training too, probably close to 250 if i had to guess.
Run lots this coming winter, and find a local group ride once a week in the spring and try and go with the guys slightly faster than you. You'll get dropped, but they'll make you faster until you can keep up. I went from a solo 18mph average to a 21mph average this summer doing the same thing.
My rule of thumb: train with guys that rip your legs off. It'll hurt like hell, but you WILL get faster
Good luck!

I was up in Lake Placid last week and went out and rode the ironman course. Fun ride, did one loop out of two. Be prepared for some climbing. I think it would be a tough bike leg in the middle of an ironman. Good luck!

Having done both, I would actually say Moo is harder than LP. Yes, there are big climbs in LP, but in MOO, it's rolling all the time, you never really get to climb and you never really get to enjoy the down hills.
