If you don't have any time expectations, just get in the pool and swim 3-4 times a week. Break up your swimming into 100-200 meter sets to help build endurance and try to swim at least the distance without a break once a week.
You can ramp up swimming a lot faster than biking and certainly running. It should be hard to get the endurance to cover 800 m. It's not very far.

I've been swimming (breathing the right way) for about 5 weeks and did a mile straight twice this week - its not as bad as you may think. Like was mentioned before, get in the pool as much as possible, even if you really dont feel like it, it helps. I had a friend help me with pointers about form, but if you dont have this available, maybe watch some youtube videos to get an idea of things to do and not to do.
For me, once I got the basic form down, distance was like 90% psychological. After 1 - 1.5 laps (50m/lap) I would always panic and want to stop to breathe. Forcing myself to relax, kick a little slower and get past the 2nd lap lead to a 3rd lap and mine as well do 5. The next few weeks it was do 10, then 15, 20 and then 32 for a mile. I found this link to be helpful too - you can make adjustments for a shorter distance:
