Do I need a wetsuit?

Race: Sprint Tri with 750M outdoor swim

Water: Manmade lake at Maumee Bay State Park (ie NOT in Lake Erie)

Date: 6/21/09

Location: Oregon, OH

This is my first outdoor swim in a race. I am a Clydesdale, so I wouldn't be doing it for speed difference per se. More about whether I'll need it for warmth.

I would do it without - but I'm kinda lazy & cheap - and a confident swimmer.

YMMV

I've done that race. that seems quite short. i think you probably wouldn't want to wear one. you have to take it off and that takes some time. the temperature (esp. this year) will be somewhat cool, but not that bad. that inland lake is a bit warmer than Lake Erie. do well. that was my first triathlon back in the nineties.

Thanks for the advice. No wet suit. Even if it's cold, I'll live. I'm going to get some open water practice in this week here in Columbus up at Alum Creek State Park.

Personally, I need all the help I can get in the water, and have yet to buy a piece of bike schwag that shaves as much time off the bike leg as a wetsuit does for the swim.

There are also wetsuit rental options that would probably be available in your area.

The thing is, getting out of a wetsuit doesn't take that much time, if you unzip and start peeling on the way to your station. Once you sit down, it's may 20 seconds to get the rest of it off your lower half. But it could take a few minutes off your swim time.

I find that it takes me longer than that. Certainly, the wet suit increases time, but I am not sure that it does so to justify its use for a 750 yard race.
