    ZIPP 3001 and 440 wheels

    Hello from the midwest. I'm introducing myself as a newbie on this forum or bike forums in general.

    I have been an avid mountain biker and now am starting ride my Zipp 3001 (photos below). I have a mint Zipp 3001 limited edition with a set of zipp 440 tubular wheels. I've had it since its been new but never road it much. It has less than 100 miles on it. Originally, I was going to sell/trade this bike for a newer road bike. I understand how rare these bikes are (less than 100 produced), and it has legendary status. So i decided to keep on to it for now.

    I've been looking to upgrade to newer lighter components to put on this speed demon. I looked on Ebay for Zipp bars, stem, and crank. I would like to have as many Zipp components as possible, but any other good alternatives? Please feel free to comment.

    you will be able to put zipp bars, stem, cranks, and water bottle cages.
    if that your plan it will get very expenive.
    as far as parts i'd say go dura ace or red

    I would sell it and get a new bike. If it's collectable, someone might pay some decent money for it. Just looking at it, you'll enjoy riding a new road or tri bike a lot more.

    I thought the Zipp 3001 was a tri or tt bike. It may be hard to find that one buyer that wants to pay good money for this bike. I find it very light and fast and would rather upgrade the components.

    What components does it currently have? I have a feeling that throwing $$$ at new components won't get you much improvement. If it were my bike, the components were decent, and the bike fit me well, I'd do the following:

    1. Cut the aero bars so you have two separate bars that look like obtuse-angled L's or ski's. Rotate the aero bars so they are parallel to each other.
    2. Move the bar-end shifters to the ends of the aero bars. (looks like the cable routes outside the bar so that should work)
    3. If it will work, cut the drop handle bars so that you have bull-horn bars. If that won't work, buy a cheap bull-horn bar.
    4. Buy appropriate brake levers for the bull-horns.

    ** All of the above will require new cables and possibly housing as well. You should probably replace those anyway since you're reviving this bike from long-term storage.

    #3 and 4 can be ignored if you're ok with the drop bars and current brake levers.

    But at the end of the day, it's your bike so do what you want. If you wanna just blow a bunch of money, knock yourself out. Send some my way while you're at it.

    Thanks for the suggestions Tyrell. The components are Suntour Sprint. Anyone heard of these? I've been looking on Ebay and found a few cheaper used carbon or aluminum bars.

    Interesting reads about the bike -- from what I've read/seen I'd say stick with this bike. Since UCI banned these types of bikes you just don't see them much, but I've read that they are some of the most aerodynamic bikes out there. As far as upgrading -- you do need new bars. To have a bike all ZIPP will be expensive!!!! If you've got the $$$ go for it, if not piece-meal it together.
    Upgrading the component group will probably be a good idea too -- if you want to save some money I'd go with Shimano Ultegra or SRAM's second tier group. Odds are you'll need a new rear wheel as I'm guessing your current set-up is 8 speed maybe? The wheel may be able to take a 9 or 10 speed cassette, hard to tell from these pictures.

    Hey nsw550 !

    You have a great machine, and still one of the most aero bikes ever made. Adding some newer lighter components are not a wasted investment on such a great machine. The Zipp's are a Tri/TT bike, but can be used as daily rides, and for ultra cycling events. I have a stable of 2 assembled Zipp 2001's, and 1 unassembled Zipp2001.     I also have a Zipp2001 and still ride it

    I still ride my Zipp2001 and have found that you have to have a fairly smooth pedal cadence because the bottom bracket moves around so much, especially on hills. Sitting on a trainer is the best way to see this. Also, my front wheel seems to move back and forth slightly (and the headset is correctly put together) because of the flex in the frame. Having said that, I still won't trade or sell this bike. People have emailed and called me for a price. It's still fun and fast to ride. I say keep it and if you really feel the need to get a new bike, don't sell this one. You might be surprised how often you will come back to it. Even with it's weaknesses.

    def interesting bikes. you don't see a lot of them at races, if any at all. how does it ride?

    any how, going all zipp will set you back some serious money but it can be done. zipp makes everything from the bars to the crankset. the headset looks threaded by the pic. in that case you'd probably want to get a threadless adapter otherwise you wouldn't be able to use a lightweight stem or integrated stem/bars. that would also mean a new fork. other than that shimano dura ace, sram red, and kmc are the lightest components.

    Here is the new Syntace bars I put on my Zipp 3001. I am really happy with them. Also put some new Zipp-Tufo tires on using the extreme glue tape. Seems like they are held on better than the orinigal glue job. We'll see how I perform riding it in my first triathlon this weekend in Indianapolis.

    Great bike!

    I used to have a 3001, but lost it in a mishap, and would like to find another. If you would like to sell, or would be interested in a trade on a new Look 496, please let me know.

    The bike performed great in the tri. The bike was super fast and stiff. I couldn't have asked for anything better. This was my first tri, so of course it was a huge learning experience. I can't wait to do more in the spring!!!

    The Zipp 3001 is a great example of how far ahead of the curve Zipp has been in technology at some points but the fork is also a great example of just not executing.

    Depending on who you are leaving that 30 seconds per 40k on the table may either bother you or not. But an aero fork would give you a little more time savings.

    Dude sweet ride I luved those bikes.......Upgrading can get crazy expensive.....If the drive train works leave it alone and get some cool aero bar set up....Regardless you will spend far more than the value of that old girl....However if you like it and I do, make it what ya want I ride an old school c-dale with old school stuff but in tri/biathlons who care who needs 11 speeds.....Aero & comfort is the key....If your comfy your gonna be fast....

    Besides my old racing saddle, i'm very pleased with my current setup. The drive train is Suntour Sprint (not sure about the quality of retro Suntour). Set up with carbon Look pedals, shimano shifters. For being such an older bike, its super stiff and fast.

    After briefly riding this set up, I've decided to sell it this season. I'm just more of a mountain bike guy. lol

    Anyone interested? This bike has less than 50 miles ridden on it!
    If you all could help me decide on a fair asking price for this bike I would appreciate it.
    I'm not familliar with what these go for these days. Keep in mind that this like-new original condition with original paint and decals.

    I bought a 3001 frame and fork a few years ago on eBay for just under $900. It's a 650 frame. It had the original rear brake, and an aftermarket front brake. I'd like to get a 700c frame.

    Mine has 440 wheels installed that are 700c wheels. That sounds like you got a great deal. I was thinking of selling it for much more than that but mine also is like new condition.

    I'm intrested. It looks like a small frame and large beam. Could you measure from the center of the bottom bracket to the center of the seat mounting pivot for me. Then I can figure if it would fit me. And how much are you asking? I have a really nice 2001. Large frame, small beam. I need the large frame/large beam. Mine was supposed to be large/large. But it wasn't. So, if you could measure that distance for me I'll know if it would fit.


    Oh, and if anybody has a large beam for sale for a 2001 or would like to swap a large beam for a small beam. Mine is red with a few nicks and chips. Original paint job. Yellow stickers. I'd do it in a heart beat.

    I can measure that when I get home today for you. Is the bottom bracket where the crank shaft rotates?
