in essence she got a 2 year ban. obviously she lost her win at ironman hawaii 2004 as well as the prize money.

well in her case i guess she simply felt pressured because of her age...
i'm german myself. i watched the ironman on the livestream on ironmanlive.com.
when kraft went on about how there was a conspiracy against german athletes when she was on her penalty in T2 i felt so ashamed...jeeez....and to top it all off, in the end she turns out to have taken EPO....

I wouldn't hazard a guess as to why athletes do the drug thing
My handle on it is this.
We live in a drug oriented society, starting with vitamins as children, flourides for better teeth,going on to aspirins, and then steadily up the hill to shots for most everything imaginable. didn't get a flu shot this season, and it is a drug also, then panic sets in.Got to have it if it means driving to Canada to get it
Have and inflamed elbow or joint, "let me give you a cortisone shot". sez the DR.
Have cold or flu syptoms, "give me an antibiotic' demands the patient
Print ads, Tv shots joyously all claim that survival depends on drugs to keep us all healthy, glamorous, wrinkle free,(look at the current Botox craze) living to a fine old age with all our senses and sensibilites, yeh sure . I want to go at 85 or so, in Italy, on my bike,going downhill on one of those mulitple switchbacked hills, about 85KMH,careening over the edge,flying into space, my last views that of the glorious scenery, screaming to St Peter to open those gates I'm heading for home
High school teenagers give selves and friends steriods obtained as easily as milk from a super market. Don't believe it? Think again
Only recently have I noticed that the large supermarket chains, and Walhgreens stores have dropped the word 'DRUG" from the outdoor signs,substituting. "Pharmacy", instead
So drugs are all pervasive in our society
Think both coffee and chocolate
Why do we expect athletes to be more holy or pure than ourselves? They are only extensions of our society and ourselves, and really reflect current morality
I have used HGH, Test, and steriods trying to put on muscle mass, with an easily obtained doctors script. Didn't work for me so I stopped, the 1k$ per month was an added inducement to stop
Seems to me to be VERY hypocritcal to use drugs oneself and then condemn athletes who do use them
Sure they may be performance enhancement(sp), but winning is what we ALL are taught from first grade. Second place?......doesn't go into the record books and no one remembers 2nd placers. The GOLD is what counts
So let the guys and gals use the drugs, put the names on the bikes, hockey sticks, bats, sneakers, cars, shorts and shirts, then we will know who are "enhanced". Make much diff in 50years? I rather doubt it at all

that's why i don't take anything! i was brought up without all that "you have a cold? here take this!". i don't have aspirin at home. the only thing my first aid kit consists of is: some vicks vaporub, band aids, disinfectant and some ointments for muscleaches and sprains....no pills or anything to swallow whatsoever...
i don't go to the doctor unless i have something. i am rarely ever sick (knock on wood)...
as far as my training goes: the only supplements i take is a magnesium tablet a day....everything else i get through regular foods...
but then again i don't have that competitive gene you were talking about....beating other people is not on my agenda.
that is why i ended up with triathlons - in particular the long distance / ironman tris! as far as i'm concerned it's about beating yourself, not that other athlete. i would think that's what those guys back in '78 were on about...
however, i am not naive and do know that not everyone thinks that way. in particular pros are in competition...nevertheless one would habe hoped that at least in IM distances participants are not there for the money but for the chance of rising above oneself....
oh well....i guess i'll have to rely on the lottery to make it to hawaii one of these days....

Mr Holden is obviously one of the intelligent and lucky people
We lived in the country when I was a born in my grandfathers house, delivered by a midwife as were my brothers and most of the neighbors children. No HMOs,no hospital, and home remedies passed on neighbor to neighbor thru the generations.
The home remedies DID in fact work; a cold? Vicks on the chest or in the nostrils and straight to bed.Mumps, measles, chicken pox?, isolated and bed for a week. Sore throat? Some wicked thing coated in our throats. Argyroll, maybe it was called.
Ear ache?Some kind of mild oil, warmed and placed in the ear followed by smoke from my fathers pipe and straight to bed, the smoke I'm sure was a placebo, but who knows, and dozens of others that helped us to survive without drugs
My point being is was a different age. I never had a prescription drug till I was in college
I think the whole competition thing has become so over blown so who really cares next season who won this season. Its the money that counts so winning at any price becomes paramount
I compete; but only against myself. I'm important to me and couldn't care about prizes and trophies, but I'm sure the lust for prizes, trophies and bux becomes much more important than integrity and honesty
Obvious also is the lack of concern shown by fans who pay billions to support pros no matter how obscene their actions, or dishonest their statements

Anyone hear of ethics? I could never justisfy to myself taking steroids, EPO, or any other substance that requires a doctor's script just to improve my PR. Pros and those who want to be pros have pressures that amateurs don't have to consider and that is why there are strict rules to punish cheaters. Amateurs who cheat just to see if it helps are pathetic. Prescription drugs have a place in society but unless an athlete has an illness that place is not in sports. I know it happens in almost every kind of competition but cheating in a voluntary activity says a lot about one's character.

I think I'll stick with coffee. If I was tested during a competition, I probably would be in trouble... I've cut down to 10-12 cups per day...
Back to Nina Kraft-story... It's not like she lacked talent... I will never understand why someone that (drug-free) by may is considered a serious contender for the title would use drugs. Stupied, stupied, stupied.
