    One Tough Mudder

My older sister participated in one last year and this is something i am definitely considering this year. Much like training for triathlons; swimming, running and obstacles are the main course for this race. Has anybody here participated in one? I am extremely interested in the Poconos Round 2 this year. Any information would be awesome.

I don't know why the video isn't showing up in a player. But just click on it.

My friend and his wife are doing one here in Phoenix a week from Saturday. Quite a bit different format than this video (possibly an option?). The one the are doing is 12 miles. He runs a 3 hour marathon and thinks it will take about 3 hours with all the obstacles. Doing a 24 hour endurance obstacle course is pretty demanding. I would be concerned about tearing and ankle or knee when fatigue sets in. If you are shatter proof or invincible go for it! There are quite a few 24 hour bike races here locally or in the region.
I don't race them, but friends who do seem to take naps during them.

I have a couple friends who did the Tough Mudder last year here in NJ/PA area. They said I should only have as much problems as anybody else out there. Completing the course is one thing. Surviving even 12 of the 24 hours has got to be the real effort/reward here.

I have never heard of one that lasts 24 hours! Similar to Sprint, my sister did a 12 miler in Atlanta last year. She said it was fun, tough, and a neat experience. Her husband did it with her and if he could finish, anyone can. They weren't trying to set any records and really just jogged between obstacles. For their race, the toughest part was dealing with the freezing water that they had to submerge themselves in during a few obstacles; that and the live, electric wires that they had to run through at the end. Fun!

I'm round 1, sunday wave for PA in April. To date, I've done 1 mudder and 2 warrior dash's. Since we're all cyclist here, endurance is not an issue. The REAL enemy at this years TM (tri state in NJ) was the cold water. I'm really lean at 5'8" 165lbs 8%BF and my body almost went into freakin hypothermia from the transition from cold water to dry and back to cold.

Anyway, my suggestions on how to prepare for a TM is pretty basic: pullups, bench, box jumps, cardio. You need to be able to run, pull yourself up stuff and push your way through the TM. I'm not sure if you guys are referring to the TM as being a 12/24hr event, but it only took me 3-4hours or so to finish.

Good stuff bick. That is what I heard from everybody who has done it was the Ice water is ridiculous. But that it's out there. People do the Polar bear plunge all the time. But I too get cold fast and weight about 145 at 5'8" < 9% BF. Currently I regularly maintain a routine of pushups, pullups, ab wheel rolls, a bunch of free weight stuff. I am a Rock Climber as well so that ability is there and should be ever improving for me. I also run everywhere I can when I go somewhere right in town for something. mile to 2 miles at a clip on the regular, but that is something I could definitely work on is my running.

The event is 24 hours long... You completed the course, but you could have KEPT GOING and going more laps. The person who goes the farthest/longest/best dressed as well as few others all get prizes/rewards. People do like 5 to 8 laps sometimes in this events. F'n crazy.

    Tough Mudder

Just to update on the tough mudder we had here over the weekend, it was pretty much an obstacle courae rather than something you have to be in shape to do. It was a 12 miler like the one mentioned here in ATL. Aside from the 12' walls and the ice bath, it is just dirty and messy. The finish was quite a interesting watch. Zapped by electricity as they bellied through water and mud, I saw one guy get zapped on 4 consecutive times on head raises only to drop again-he didn't move an inch forward.

Looks like a team of two or more is best for mutual assistance on obstacles.

The real endurance is your wallet. Cash grab of $20 per person to watch plus $10 to park ($40 per person day of event). Spectating involves wandering between the obstacles to follow friends. Fun, but the cash is the endurance required. They doubled the entry fee from 12 months out ($80 to I think $160) for this small 12 mile course. I got some hilarious video and pics from mt everest and other parts of the race.

As fit as you are and having done this 12 miler, the 24 hour should be much more challenging for your fitness level. Good luck and upload some experiences if you can...
