triathlons and kids
My 9-year-old daughter is interested in doing a triathlon. she swims with a Y swim team 3-4 days a week for an hour and a half. she loves to run and can run 2 miles at the track, sometimes after a swim practice. bike riding is her weakest event, but she's ridden 10 miles on her own. she's interested in being a triathlete, and i have no idea how much is too much for a kid this young, or if there are even events for children. how can i help her get started? this is coming from her, not me. i'm looking for resources, events, advice. we live in the los angeles area
Can i get a WOOT WOOT
the only advice that i can think of right now is try and find a triathlon club in our area
I'm only 14 and just started december 2003 and i think that, joining a club was the best thing i could have done
You can also check out a few books (I'm not sure if there are any geared towards kids) but there are triahtlon books
As for races I'm not too sure about what runs down in the U.S. But in Ontario (Canada) we have a race series specifically for kids. It is called the "Kids Of Steel" and the age groups range from 4and 5 year olds - 16 and 17 year olds. THey changed the distances t suit each age group and you get a participants medal and T-Shirt and all the little goodies
Anyways Just thought id put a word in
I'm 16 in the San Francisco area, and if you search Tri California on google, their official website hosts clubs, events, and camps for the little kids.
Its mainly for younger kids (10 and under) the distance is suited perfectly for them.
If your child can already bike 10, run 2, and swims regularly, then she could sign up for it right now and be fine.
Hope that helps.
P.S. the camp is designed to be fun so your child won't burn out, if that's a concern for you
